Birthplace and nationality[edit]

Hans Richter was born to a German family in Győr, Hungary, which in German is called Raab. Even the German article on him admits to this. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Gyula (talk • contribs) 02:42, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

New Grove, Oxford Companion, and Oxford Dictionary (of Music) all say Raab (now Győr). Thanks for correcting the mistake. However, since those sources indicate that it was called Raab at the time, I've put back Raab, while leaving your addition of Győr and hopefully making it clear that it's not the same as the Austrian market town Raab. Győr (= Raab) was an important Hungarian city already from 10th century. Its population after the Turkish age became semi-Hungarian, semi-German, with an important Serbian (and a little Croatian, Slovakian, Bulgarian, Gipsy etc.) minority. It had two names: Győr in Hungarian and Raab in German, both are official at the same time (for example, the church used it in Hungarian, the post in German).

Richter's nationality is a little bit problematic. His father Anton Richter was born Austrian, settled in Hungary at his age of 19 — and here became a Hungarian composer. His maternal grandmother, Margit Speyer was German (born in Győr, her family lived in Győr for centuries), his maternal grandfather, Ignaz Csazenszky was Polish origin, born in Bohemia, settled in Győr as a soldier-musician. So, Richter's nationality is mixed. His native language was German (just the same as Franz Liszt), like it was common in western Hungary, but also spoke Hungarian. He used his name's Hungarian form in Hungary (Richter János, also as his signature), in German form in abroad (Hans Richter). A double or triple identity was really common in Hungary in that time. But his citizenship was Hungarian, he used Hungarian passport from his birth till his death. As we can know it, he took himself Hungarian.
