Claim of "being plagued by tragedy and scandal"[edit]

This claim is rather vague, seems to be stating an opinion as fact (see Avoid stating opinions as facts in WP:NPOV and has no supporting reference (see WP:V). Autarch (talk) 19:22, 7 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Why are the family introduced as "Irish Protestants" as opposed to just "Irish"? It's unnecessary and a bit ridiculous to put this in the first few words of the article, if their are no reasonable objections I propose the article be edited so that matters of religion are reserved to the section for matters of religion.

Ascendancy or not?[edit]

The "Ascendancy" was so described in the 1780s and ran Ireland until the union in 1801, so the family were not members, being merchants and lawyers. A small number married into descendant generations of the Ascendancy in the following century or two, but that's not the same thing. So I'm removing the sentence and cited article added by Mabuska (that doesn't actually mention the word Ascendancy).PatrickGuinness (talk) 17:43, 26 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Anglo-Irish[edit]

Okay, so if the Guinness family is to be listed as "Irish" and not "Anglo-Irish" (which they were), then I assume the editor/s responsible for this change will head over to all the other biographies and family pages of the Anglo-Irish and change their identities to "Irish".

"Anglo-Irish" refers to the Irish upper class or aristocracy from the 17th Century until the time of independence, and was not a blood group or a genealogical label. There were families with Irish origins (and usually mixed origins) like the Guinnesses who were Anglo-Irish. The editor who made this change back in June left a note indicating that he does not understand who the Anglo-Irish were (The Guinness family is listed as Anglo-Irish on the main article).
