Glide ratio[edit]

Is that figure of 5.2 rally right, even though it's what the Russian sorce (citable?) says? Gunston's book on Russian aircraft (Gunston, Bill (1995). The Osprey Encyclopedia of Russian Aircraft 1875-1995. London: Osprey (Reed Consumer Books Ltd). p. 82. ISBN 1-85532-405-9.), in agreement on most of the specifications, has 19.2! Both sources are agreed on the "cruise"/"normal" speed 40.6 m/s) and the (minimum) rate of sink (2.2 m/s) and the ratio of these is 18.5 = glide angle. You might fret a little about differences between speeds for minimum sink and for best glide ratio but, though the latter is always bigger, it is typically only so by around 15%. Surely the brick-like 5.2 is wrong? Be interesting to know the glide ratio (L/D) for other big gliders like the Horsa but these seem hard to find.TSRL (talk) 20:56, 18 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
