Map[edit]

This article could really use a map, showing the many locations and possibly naming them all. Anybody got one? Can ask the state?--Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 15:38, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that would be good. At this point I haven't found a free map.
--Mcorazao (talk) 02:35, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I took a stab at this based on some of the existing state maps. It is very simple but gives some general info. --Mcorazao (talk) 03:42, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Reorganize[edit]

I started out posting a picture then looking for maps. The article bounced around so I reorganized it adding and expanding "sections" that will make it easier to read. I will add to the info box as soon as possible and expand the central and lower sections. Otr500 (talk) 12:11, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Otr500, thanks for taking an interest in the article and working so much to expand it. It is an interesting topic and certainly deserves more attention than I have given it. I would caution you, however, to be careful in your edits. Some of your changes have made sections less readable and some violate WP:MOS. It is tempting to think "If I am adding to an article then I must be improving it" but this is not always the case. In some cases it is even better to experiment in a sandbox area until you get your new version of the article up to the same level of quality as the old.
Anyway, good luck in your research and writing. --Mcorazao (talk) 15:52, 23 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Yes it is interesting and thank you. I still have some learning to do on the "Sandbox" but if I have screwed anything up you can correct it or delete it with reason and I will either be happy (for assistance) or work more on it. Certainly if there are violations (or even possible) I hope you do correct them but at any rate let me know. I have just recently moved from (almost) the middle of Kisatchie National Forrest (and Fort Polk woods) and many beautiful birds. Our favorite swimming hole is a few yards from the sign in the picture and some amazing sights. Otr500 (talk) 05:56, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I have taken my share of critique for edits I have done.
I edited a couple of things. I'll look at it some more as I have time (my real life has gotten a bit more busy of late). Some things to think about:
  • Make sure the lead is reasonably complete (see WP:LEAD). The lead should summarize the contents, even if it is somewhat redundant.
  • Make sure the inline citations (<ref>) are formatted reasonably well (using {{cite web}}, {{cite book}}, etc.). And avoid the temptation to put a ref simply to give a reader a link to the main web site for the thing mentioned. That's not what they are for.
  • Be careful about over-using bullets (*) and boldface (see WP:BOLDFACE). There are specific guidelines on these. In most cases where you might be tempted to use these you shouldn't. If you are tempted to highlight specific words, italics is more acceptable (although even that should be done sparingly).
  • Avoid using tables instead of prose. As a general rules tables should be to the side of the text providing extra details that the text does not. In other words, tables are a supplement but the article should be readable without the tables.
  • Avoid original research. It can sometimes seem that a list of information is incomplete without filing in certain details (e.g. how pretty something is or what there is to see). Even though what you are writing may reflect widely held opinions, it may still not be appropriate. Usually subjective terms like "beautiful" are inappropriate except when you are directly quoting some author in a notable work. Other details do not have to be quotes but they do need to at least reflect what some author has said about the place.
--Mcorazao (talk) 13:56, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok--WOW! that is good to know. I would rather write it out than put it in a box. So I will do that as time allows. Remove excessive bullets, box, and subjective terms. There is a description of the sign where the sign was. I had moved it because it related to "UTC" but I would never want to leave something barren. I know that a description can be added in a picture caption. Would you see if the description can be moved, captioned, or deleted? Otr500 (talk) 14:22, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The main thing with the sign was that on my display that section was getting crowded with the images and the table. It was actually squeezing the text in between the image and the table which WP:MOS says is a no-no. Looking back at the history section it was looking kind of empty so I figured it was best to move the image back there (even though it really only weakly supports that section). But if you decide to reorganize further and find that the image is more appropriate elsewhere after reorganizing a bit more feel free to move it again. --Mcorazao (talk) 15:51, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. To be clear, there is no prohibition against using tables. It is the supplementary aspect that is important. --Mcorazao (talk) 15:52, 24 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Ok- Looking back I saw that. I may just remove the description for now. I have never worked with anyone on an article yet so your thoughts; If I reorganize the box, and finish missing info, would that look alright or better in prose on this article? I am about to embark on a long winded job (in the morning I hope) for a few days on the gulf so will be tied up.
  • I am also trying to find some information. On U.S. Route 190 on the Sabine River there are some birds that make nests of clay under the bridge. Have you(or anyone else) seen these and if so what are they? Otr500 (talk) 01:13, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the boldface in the info box and original research. I added italics to "view", but now I think this should be removed and dropped down a line. I added the sign description as a referece to the sign. It seems approriate under history which describes adding signs. Otr500 (talk) 16:39, 3 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
