3 kinds of graupel?[edit]

This page seems to disagree substantially with the dictionary definition of graupel. Why? Matt Gies 18:39, 9 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm wondering the same thing. I've only heard the third definition when referring to graupel in weather books. Dictionaries tend to agree as well [1][2], as do weather glossaries from The Weather ChannelNational Snow and Ice Data Center, and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). If there're no compelling reasons to keep the first two definitions, I'll delete them soon. Thanks. Ufwuct 21:34, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I made the changes. I will now make this a redirect to Graupel (snow). Ufwuct 17:25, 12 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Center snowflake"[edit]

The first sentence currently reads: "Graupel (also called snow pellets) refers to precipitation that forms when freezing fog forms 2–5 mm balls of rime ice around a center snowflake." What does "center snowflake" mean here? Is this just a typo? Schi 19:33, 26 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Graupel are balls of rime ice that surround an unseen snowflake. The snowflake is in the center of the ball, so it's "a center snowflake". The wording could be better, I guess... — BRIAN0918 • 2006-09-27 01:39Z
I get it now. I think the current wording is much improved: "Graupel (also called snow pellets) refers to precipitation that forms when freezing fog condenses on a snowflake, forming a 2–5 mm ball of rime ice; the snowflake acts as a nucleus of condensation in this process." Merge tag[edit]

I oppose merging this article with snow pellets.I endorse merging Snow Pellets with this article. If anything, the reverse should be true. The stated reason for the tag is that we "already have an article on snow pellets", which is fine, but graupel is the better term in my opinion, and this article contains more information, having better structure and content. This article also already has a talk page with a number of edits, compared with no such page for snow pellets, and has already been assessed. The sum of which would imply that WP:NAME in this instance would side with graupel, which is would apparently be the name most interested people would be likely to look for. --Crimsone 18:46, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think the either tag on Graupel or Snow pellet specifies "to" or "from", but I agree that the main article should be "Graupel" (i.e., a merge to Graupel). Using the hackneyed method (on Wikipedia, at least) of Google searches, I got the following:
  • 939 results for "snow pellet".[3]
  • 36,100 results for "snow pellets".[4]
  • 186,000 results for "graupel".[5]
It appears that graupel is the more commonly used term. Ufwuct 18:42, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I also support eliminating the snow pellet article and having it redirect to this article, for the reasons mentioned above. Thegreatdr 20:35, 28 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
