General[edit]

Saying it only went to a general would be incorrect. There are recorded instances of individuals winning the grass crown who did not have the equivalent rank of general. Most prominent might be Quintus Sertorius, who won the honor as a military tribune, which would be the equivalent of maybe a colonel in today’s army. A military tribune would not normally hold an independent command. This demonstrates that while the award is most often recorded as being given to generals, it also was awarded to lower ranked officers who saved the army. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.15.119.9 (talk) 04:00, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The comparison with Christian superstitions seems just a tiny bit superfluous. We are dealing with credible historic facts here (at least, the later recipients), not superstitious woo. ~~ — Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.186.70.1 (talk) 13:05, 2 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Comparison with Medal of Honor[edit]

Medal of Honor is not necessarily awarded posthumously; so I am going to fix the article. Redsox00002 (talk) 00:00, 29 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Victoria Cross and Medal of Honor[edit]

I doubt that it's of any use to mention the Victoria Cross and Medal of Honor in connection with the Grass Crown. The Victoria Cross and Medal of Honor may be top military awards, but the main difference is that Victoria Cross and Medal of Honor are decorations for individual gallantry in the face of the enemy; in addition is may be awarded to any soldier regardless of rank. The Grass Crown however was conferred for able leadership of large units of troops and could only be given to generals. A modern award which seems more comparable is the Soviet Union's Order of Victory. ViennaUK (talk) 10:13, 25 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed, the more comparable Roman decoration would have been the Civic Crown, awarded for saving the lives of fellow soldiers and holding the ground upon which he did this for the remainder of the engagement. Although the Medal of Honor has been awarded in the like of the Grass cown as well. -- fdewaele, 25 May 2008, 12:48.
