Automatic Award[edit]

For those of you wondering, this award is is awarded to everyone in the military who is not in Boot Camp or their MOS school and has been in the "fleet"(as we call it in the Marine Corps) for over 30 days. Its real easy to tell the brand new "boots" from the ones tht have been around for a little while by whether they have the GWOT Service an the National Defense or only the National Defense. Not sure what it means to be "in the fleet" since I don't speak USMC, but something sounds wrong about that statement. There are many positions in the military which will not afford one the opportunity to support the GWOT within 30 days of being MOSQed. --VAcharon 17:49, 31 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
They've gone back and forth on this one a couple of times. As it stands, I think they are awarding the GWOTS to anyone who is on active duty or active reserve; because HQMC is considering everything to be in support of the war, even recruiting and fixing trucks in Okinawa. But they have changed the policy a couple of times; last I heard, they stopped giving it so freely; and the last ball I went to (2006), some of the boots had only thier pizza stain. Incidentally I just got photos of my brother's graduation from army training, and he had this medal on his board. So it seems like anyone gets it if they're in the army right now, whether or not they've been involved in any campaign. - Keith D. New soldiers are not supposed to receive the GWOT-SM until after they arrive at their first assignment and have at least 30 days time-on-station. I have not found any proof of this paragraph. AR 600-8-22 (year 2006) clearly said, "30 consecutive days or 60 nonconsecutive days of active service IN SUPPORT of ONE, OEF and OIF". One of the problems with this article right now is a lot of users are apparently editing it from an Army point of view. The Army in fact is the most fanatical about this medal (no offense :-)), making it a very serious UCMJ offense to wear it without authority and putting out pages and pages of memos and instructions about its issuance and all the exceptions for Guardsmen, USAR, etc doing training and how they should earn it. That's all fine, of course, and no one should wear it without earning it. The Navy, on the other hand, is pretty loose about this. Recruits get it after they put in their sixty days and reservists generally get it after 6 months of drill. It is also very clearly issued to reservists - I've been attached to two separate Naval Reserve Centers since 2001 and the medal was routinely "blanket issued" to anyone attending drill with the Page 13s typed up by the local units at the center. There was little oversight by higher authority and there have been a grand total of 2-3 NAVADMINS about this medal in contrast to the volumes of instructions the Army has put out. I served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve from 12/2004-10/2011 and I was never activated or deployed overseas (I still don't know how that happened). The GWOTSM showed up on my Marine Online account. Later I commissioned in the Army National Guard and wanted to get proof of my awards for the Army database (since the Army hasn't awarded me any awards yet) and when I requested an official record of my awards from the USMC, they said I didn't rate the award. I think the absence of a record of my GWOTSM is weird as my USMC record also had me listed incorrectly as a USMC Rifle Sharpshooter even though my last three rifle qualifications were Expert Awards, which I have proof of. I am currently trying to get my USMC record corrected, since the GWOTSM showed up in my Marine Online account. Since I was discharged from the USMC, I can access my Marine Online account but no information shows up at all for my awards, or other information. So I'm confused and unsure if non-activated/deployed service members in a reserve or national guard status can earn the award. Category:Recipients of the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal[edit]

Should we create "Category:Recipients of the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal"? Ryan Owens was one, but are there enough recipients to populate the category?Zigzig20s (talk) 08:21, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Not a good idea. It's a service medal issued to thousands, much like the National Defense Service Medal. Categories for military awards tend to stick to heroism, valor, and combat medals. Meritorious medals, like the Achievement Medal, as well as all service medals, campaign medals, and ribbons, are not deemed of significance to warrant a category. -O.R.Comms 14:54, 1 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

As I said, the military award categories tend stick to heroism and valor awards. Past attempts to put up categories for service medals, campaign medals, and even non-combat meritorious medals (Army Achivement Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, etc) have all been speedy deleted as extraneous categories per WP:CAT. -O.R.Comms 15:49, 3 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Is this "Clipped Wings" Eagle used on any other US medals?[edit]
