Untitled[edit]

I am still working on the full historical notes of this railway: I'm away for a week now, but will try to do a more complete job on my return. All of these pre-grouping railways deserve a lengthy explanation of their antecedents, to show where they came from, in my opinion. Peter Shearan 19:21, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How's that work going?
By the way I cant' find much to back up the proposed Hunterston railway material; both the links on the page are broken. Afterbrunel (talk) 10:39, 15 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Shipping section[edit]

At present this article has a lengthy Passenger ships section.

I think it could well be expanded and I think it deserves an article of its own. If no-one objects I'll do that, and reduce the text in this main article to just a summary.

The new article ought to have a lot of information about routes (and mayeb a bit about boat trains); and also freight boats. Afterbrunel (talk) 17:41, 6 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Afterbrunel (talk) 10:16, 12 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
For the avoidance of misunderstanding, I have exported the Shipping material to a new page; I think much more needs to be written about the topic -- at the moment it is simply a list of vessels. Nonetheless it was in danger of demanding a disproportionate amount of space in the main article, which still needs substantial enhancement. I have incorporated a basic reference to the "daughter article" in this G&SWR article; that too needs to be expanded a little. Afterbrunel (talk) 10:39, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, but there nneds to be a link from this article to the shipping article. Mjroots (talk) 13:09, 13 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Well, the link I put in the article was

(main heading)Shipping

Serving many piers and harbours on the Firth of Clyde it was natural that the G&SWR developed G&SWR shipping services to the islands and other piers. This traffic increased considerably in the 1870s and excursion traffic also became significant.

Why not expand that a little, or better still expand the shipping article. It needs a lot of work (most of which is outside my area of knowledge); routes; growth over time; development of trippers; development of the businessmen who weekended on the islands and travelled to their places of business on Monday morning; independent competition; piers; LMS attitude; post war decline.
