Dap and Fist Bump[edit]

As a form of vernacular African-American Culture, the term Dap pre-dates and should have precedence over "fist bump" . Dap should have it's own arcticle and should not be merged. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alphaprobe (talkcontribs) 11:35, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This article should most definitely NOT be merged with fist bump. Even though one of the names for the fist bump is "dap," it is a component of dap greetings, not the same. The high five is component of dap greetings as well, but it most deservedly deserves a separate article, as does "fist bump."

What about a trivia section?[edit]

In the1988 Spike Lee film School Daze, Laurence Fishburne played a character named "Dap". (ALPH) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alphaprobe (talkcontribs) 11:40, 11 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That stems from the character's last name being "Dunlap" - not any relation to this article. -Etoile (talk) 14:20, 24 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fox news "terrorist" thing[edit]

I removed the bit about the Fox news presenter, which was a little misleading, albeit technically correct. We could add a couple of sentences to give it rounded NPOV context (the presenter's subsequent apology and explanation, for example), but it didn't seem a particularly major point to begin with. — Matt Crypto 00:09, 10 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Centuries??? Really?[edit]

..."even though as a tradition it has existed in the African-American community for centuries." Definition of "century", of which the plural form necessitates 2 or more. 2009-1776=233 years of "America", let alone "african-american" which did not exist until the 1960s, at the earliest. Centuries?? Is that really the phrase we need to use here? 144.162.93.54 (talk) 23:06, 30 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There have been African Americans (people of African descent living in what is now the U.S.) since at least 1619. MingusMingus (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 18:38, 13 July 2011 (UTC).[reply]

Proposed merge from Lock and fly[edit]

The article Lock and fly has serious issues. It has been unreferenced since 2006, at which time it was also suggested on Talk:Lock and fly that there are no sources - reliable or otherwise - calling the gesture by this name. Searches of Google and Google Books for "lock and fly" gesture -wikipedia and "lock and fly" handshake -wikipedia return essentially no relevant sources except for a few apparently uncredited Wikipedia mirrors.

I'm not completely certain what to do with the article since, as discussed in 2006, elaborated handshake gestures do exist, but there are no sources describing this particular one. I can think of two possibilities: the article Lock and fly could be merged to Dap greeting or perhaps some other article treating similar greeting gestures, or it could be deleted. Is there support for merger? Barring that, are there other suggestions? Cnilep (talk) 15:14, 24 March 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hearing no other suggestions, I have merged the pages, in the process creating the section "Variants". Feel free to restore this content to Lock and fly if that page can be improved. Equally, feel free to remove the section (I have marked it as unreferenced); if you do so, you may wish to nominate Lock and fly at WP:RfD. Cnilep (talk) 21:02, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Removed Obama inauguration fist bump mention[edit]

This was simply a fist bump, which has its own article, and should be mentioned there. Dap may not be formally defined, but a fist bump is a fist bump.50.147.26.108 (talk) 17:14, 30 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
