Cocaine addiction?[edit]

George Graves [1876-1949], in his 1931 autobiography (page 218) speaks Of Gertie Millar being addicted to Cocaine. I don't know if there are any other sources on this. Johncmullen1960 (talk) 06:11, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly does he say? Also, I can't find his autobiography. Can you give the publisher name? Cocaine ended the career of Billie Carleton, but I don't see other references to Millar being addicted to it. -- Ssilvers (talk) 13:38, 15 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The book is probably Gaieties and Gravities: The Autobiography of a Comedian which was published in 1931 by Hutchinson. As I do not have access to a copy I can not look up what was said. But it is a fact that autobiographies are not always reliable. I also wonder what makes Graves an expert. Maybe Millar used cocaine, maybe through Billie Carlton. Maybe she took it occasionally and should not be considered an addict. The autobiography came out in 1931. Millar left the stage around 1918 and lived until 1952. Baron Gunther Rau von Holzhauzen[edit]

Baron Gunther Rau von Holzhauzen was an admirer who shot himself in Gertie Millars boudoir 30 october 1905, creating a bit of a scandal. Gertie Millar, who was married to Lionel Monckton at the time was not present. The body was found by the parlourmaid. JHvW 21:18, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. The source I found (and cited) said that she and Monckton were, indeed, present, awoken by the maid, who found him alive and hiding. She ran up the stairs to wake up the Moncktons, and they heard the pistol go off. -- Ssilvers (talk) 09:40, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Because of your earlier question I had already formulated a reply, a bit superfluous now, but here it is anyway: It was reported in the newspapers, not always a reliable source of information, but I thought it was interesting enough to mention it here. He is buried in Kensal Green Cemetery. If the dates on his headstone are correct, he would have been in his twenties. The name sounds as if he was a member of the Rau von Holzhausen family, German nobility I know very little about. I also wonder why he was living in London rather than Germany, he sounds like a highly strung and infatuated young man. It would probably have been in the tabloids (for example Evening Express and Evening Mail, via the National Library of Wales), here are some foreign newspapers: [https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/4986749 The Advertiser Melbourne (via Trove), New Zealand Herald, San Francisco Call.
The article I cited (which is extremely detailed and agreed with another source I read) indicates that he was in London to avoid military service in Germany, which annoyed his family, who cut off his allowance, hence his financial difficulties.
