explore nature's grandeur: MINALUNGAO "The Hidden Paradise"[edit]

PAPAYA is soon to be identified as a major growth focal point and is extremely well positioned to be such. Its highly strategic location, being in a major turning point in the municipality, augurs well for the development of municipal facilities. Current and proposed projects, as identified in several governments and private sector plans, further strengthen the municipality’s position hub in governance and trading.

Soon, the municipality will also harness its tourism potentials. One of Papaya’s tourist attractions is the MINALUNGAO National Park, located at Sitio Minalungao, Barangay Pias. Derived from the term “MINA” and “LUNGAO”—meaning mine of gold in caves—MINALUNGAO prides of its untouched natural environments in Central Luzon. The vicinity has enormous prospects for ecotourism waiting for development. Its untouched river, spring and unique geological features characterized by breathtaking rock formations, offer an exhilarating experience to discerning tourists. Because of its remote location, solace and refuge are bestowed to weary souls for tranquillity and peace. Practically, it’s a veritable paradise, an ideal place for soul- searching and communing with nature. This site covers the whole of Minalungao, including its protected landscape at Sitio Minalungao, Barangay Pias, about 15 kilometers east of the town proper. The Minalungao protected landscape has a total land area of 2,018 hectares and is open for a Build, Operate and Transfer Scheme together with the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources. The access road leading to the park from the town proper is classified as Barangay Road. The road from Barangay Pias to the park is good condition. It is also accessible via Gapan City. If it is the more remote and less-used portions of Minalungao National Park you wish to visit, you are invited to do so by using one of several hiking trails through the area. The trails are open year-round for a hike on a cloudy forest. Regardless of the month of the year, you are sure to have an enjoyable experience. Minalungao literally means “mine of gold in a cave” have several caves which can explore by more fearless ones attracting several visitors every summer. The river also has a portion where a stone ledge located about 15 meters high from the river can be used as spring board by fearless divers showing off to yearly visitors to the park. Despite their varying origins, all limestone exposures can support plants such as green spleenwort and are important for crane flies, while fissures within cliff faces house ferns, including maidenhair fern. Cliff ledges support shrubs such as rock white beam, tall herbs such as knapweed and harebell, and small flowers such as spring cinquefoil. Such ledges also provides important nesting sites for the returning peregrine and raven while caves provide hibernation sites for bats. The Minalungao National Park is Papay (General Tinio) most popular attraction and covers a vast area of lush forest, dark mountains, caves and white beaches. The caves are filled with filigree-like sculptures formed by stalagmites and stalactites. Near its mouth is a beautiful lagoon with crystal-clear water that teems with fish. As a natural area, the Park has attracted an increasing number of hikers, bikers, biologist, photographers, students and nature lovers. It is a source of pride and a key element in the identity of the people of Papaya in particular and of the Philippines as a whole. Serene like a mother lulling a child to sleep, and unexploited like the towering mountains that surround it, that is Minalungao National Park. The place has lots to offer from waterfalls, mangrove tours and rivers but nothing beats the proven tourism-magnet, the Minalungao River that’s inviting for a dip in the middle of a scorching heat. The water here is restful because it is surrounded by several other mountains. This is not exactly the middle of the forest but the element of water (sea), fire (sun), wind and forest would conjure one to a contemplative mood while sitted on the benches below the towering trees. Commune with Mother Nature. She is everywhere. And those Sierra Madre Mountain Rages? You can gaze at them or you can explore. Climb to the top for an embracing sweep of the breeze that surrounds them and the grassy mountain you walked on. Quite the spot for a sunrise or sunset. Maybe also some torches and fire ring at night. Amazingly, funny and weird but it seems the lime stones cliffs were made carefully from a blueprint or plan. In the journey from end to end of river, for sure you will meet a lot of other groups, locals and foreigners.
