Origin of name?[edit]

'House' is pretty obvious, but why 'gate'? Is it because of the use of gate valves? -- in which case this should be mentioned in the article (and a 'see also' back link added there). EdJogg (talk) 12:28, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Good point. I'd think it refers to any "contrivance for stopping or regulating the passage of water" (OED defn. 6b), but more specifically to a sluice gate. Presumably the plumbing term gate valve comes from the more general term. I'll add something to the article. --Macrakis (talk) 13:25, 29 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]
