Claim[edit]

The claim that, in the late 19th Century, nickel metal was unusually expensive is nonsense. The first Indian head cents in the U.S., from 1859 to 1864, contained 12% nickel. The five cent coin, introduced in 1866, contained 25% nickel (whence the coin's nickname "nickel"), same as it does today. As for the Victorians being unable to process sulfide ore, it is still more expensive to process sulfide ore today, not only for nickel but for other metals as well.
