Chief editor in field?

I read SF but don't keep up with the "field" itself much, which is why I came here. Two quick notes, I've heard Gardner refered to as the most influential editor in the field while he manned the editorial desk at Asimov's. I believe I picked that up in an online SF Channel article when he retired from that post. Is this general consensus? Also he seems to not be fond of Greenburg's work when he mentions it in the yearly summary. Is this just artistic? Or does it go further? Nickjost (talk) 19:01, 3 August 2009 (UTC)

Raymond Dozois

This is a data point so that the article can later be updated to included Gardner Dozois' parents names as in " ... born to Raymond Dozois (~1916-~1996) and First (nee Last) Last (birth-death)" along with citations once we have better data on Raymond and data for Gardner's mother.

The Dozois' anthology The Year's Best Science Fiction: Fourteenth Annual Collection notes "Dead in 1996 or early 1997 ... Raymond Dozois, 80, father of SF editor Gardner Dozois."

I used (~1916-~1996) for Raymond Dozois as while father's date of death is likely 1996 it could be in early 1997. If it's 1996 then the father's date of birth could be as early as 2-Jan-1915 (if he died on 1-Jan-1996 the day before his 81st birthday) and as late as 31-Dec-1916 (if he died on his 80th birthday on 31-Dec-1996). If he died in early 1997 at age 80 then he could also have been born in early 1917. Thus the DOB year is in the range 1915 to 1917 pending better data. --Marc Kupper|talk 18:45, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

A casual Google search seems to confirm this meaning you could add it to the article if you can locate a reliable and verifiable source. None of the web pages I ran across seemed to qualify as WP:RS but the odds are that reliable sources do exist that would support this claim. I would drop "always" from the claim unless you can prove that each and every time Asimov referred to Dozois, even in private and his thoughts, that he included "Chestertonian". :-) --Marc Kupper|talk 20:28, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

It occurred in a number of the prefaces in IASF mag. during the period when he was the editor, but a lot of those issues are kind of trapped behind furniture in my apt. right now Looking through some of the ones that weren't, I found this on page 8 of the July 1990 issue (part of the Isaac Asimov editorial titled "Figurehead?"): "The Chestertonian Garder Dozois is the editor of this magazine."

Don't know that he literally always did it, but it happened enough to become a kind of fixed phrase or "Homeric epithet... -- AnonMoos (talk) 22:22, 20 February 2009 (UTC)
