Article title[edit]

The Icelandic Eurovision 2020 entry currently has two separate Wikipedia pages: Gagnamagnið and Daði Freyr Pétursson. The article Gagnamagnið (this article) states that "Gagnamagnið is an Icelandic band led by Daði Freyr Pétursson". However, doesn't the title of the article ("Gagnamagnið" instead of "Daði & Gagnamagnið") imply that Daði is not a part of the band?

I don't believe Gagnamagnið exists as a band separate from Daði Freyr, similar to how "The Waves" are not a band on their own, but from the band Katrina and the Waves together with Katrina Leskanich. Therefore, I think a better title for the article would be Daði & Gagnamagnið.

If the title is changed, the articles Eurovision Song Contest 2020, Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest 2020, etc. can all link to this page (i.e. "Daði & Gagnamagnið"), instead of linking to both Daði Freyr Pétursson and Gagnamagnið separately (i.e. "Daði & Gagnamagnið"). ― Ætoms ^[talk] 01:02, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A quick counter-point: The group collectively call themselves "Gagnamagnið" (instead of "Dadi & Gagnamagnið") in their display-name on social media (their Instagram, etc.). I originally created a article about Daði & Gagnamagnið. How about having that article as the main page for their Eurovision attempt. Redirecting Gagnamagnið into that one. And keeping Dadis article separate. BabbaQ (talk) 11:17, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

"Gagnamagnið" is correct, the WP:OFFICIALNAME, and the WP:COMMONNAME; "Daði & Gagnamagnið" is neither. This is the same as "Izhar Cohen and the Alphabeta" and "Sanja Ilić & Balkanika". The article name should remain "Gagnamagnið". IceWelder [✉] 12:34, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

As is/was Sanja Ilić of Balkanika and Albert Černý of Lake Malawi. The latter competed in Poland's NF as "Albert Černý z Lake Malawi" and we wouldn't consider moving the band's article for that either. IceWelder [✉] 12:39, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I think both your examples are different from "Daði & Gagnamagnið" because the articles Alphabeta and Balkanika do not claim Izhar Cohen and Sanja Ilić are part of these groups. As for "Albert Černý z Lake Malawi", we cannot assume that they would have entered the contest as "Albert Černý & Lake Malawi" if Albert would have won Szansa na sukces. As I said before, I would argue that "Daði & Gagnamagnið" is most similar to "Katrina and the Waves": Daði is the lead singer of Daði & Gagnamagnið, just like how Katrina is the lead singer of Katrina and the Waves.

Maybe the main difference is that the act is named "Daði & Gagnamagnið" and not "Daði Freyr & Gagnamagnið", in which case I would argue that Daði is separate from the group since he is referred to by his full name. Similarly, Izhar Cohen and Sanja Ilić are referred to by their full names, while Katrina Leskanich is not.

The best solution – in my opinion – is to rename this article "Daði & Gagnamagnið" and make this page a disambiguation page, referring both to "Daði & Gagnamagnið" and the song "Think About Things". This makes navigation to these pages easiest, as visitors would probably search for "Gagnamagnið" if they're looking for the song (since it's the Icelandic title) and "Daði & Gagnamagnið" if they're looking for the band. ― Ætoms ^[talk] 13:33, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This was the case, actually, although I fail to see how the name of the competing act changes the circumstances of its naming. The act is currently titled "Daði & Gagnamagnið", but the group's name is just "Gagnamagnið". This is attested in the group's social media outlets and the credits of the official music video. Daði simply gets a special mention for being the lead singer and writer/composer of the song. This might not be exactly the same as Balkanika in 2018, but certainly similar: Sanja Ilic was not even on-stage, he just co-composed the song and formed the group that performed it some 20 years prior, yet has was mentioned individually.

Additionally, I will argue that the article could just as well be integrated into Daði Freyr's article. The Eurovision WP has a tendency to create an article for every artist and song that ever graces the Eurovision stage (even songs that were not released yet), regardless of (prospected) notability. Gagnamagnið, as an ad hoc group seemingly formed only for this participation, is no exception. IceWelder [✉] 14:27, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm, yeah that seems to be right. In that case, maybe it's best to treat this page as the main article for the Icelandic Eurovision 2020 act, instead of referring to both Daði Freyr and Gagnamagnið on pages such as Eurovision Song Contest 2020. So I suggest to change the links there to "[[Gagnamagnið|Daði & Gagnamagnið]]" and change this article's lead to "Gagnamagnið, also credited as Daði & Gagnamagnið, is an Icelandic band led by Daði Freyr Pétursson." as to emphasize that the band is normally called Gagnamagnið, but credited differently in Eurovision. ― Ætoms ^[talk] 17:40, 1 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Personally, I think this article shouldn't be merged with the Iceland in Eurovision 2020 article. To be fair, they are performing on the global international stage of Eurovision, after all. They're notable enough to keep their article. Paintspot Infez (talk) 15:50, 3 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Note that Daði Freyr himself has literally described Gagnamagnið as a "fictional band". This quote from Metro: "The concept of the band three years ago was, because you can't play actual instruments at Eurovision, we made our own instruments, so that's how the whole concept of the sweaters and the feel of this fictional Eurovision band came about."^[1] Gagnamagnið were also described as "a fictional band made especially for the contest" in the Independent.^[2] DivingSpicy (talk) 02:32, 15 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
