Categorized as such because Category:South Brooklyn currently contains Boerum Hill as well. Epic Genius (talk) 15:55, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

So I see. Can we find a source to support this? As I said, the Encyclopedia of New York City says that "South Brooklyn is an obsolete and imprecise term applied to the southern parts of the city of Brooklyn" and names Red Hook, Carroll Gardens and Park Slope. The AIA Guide to NYC doesn't use "South Brooklyn" and uses descriptive geographical divisions instead of names. BMK (talk) 16:08, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'll see if I can find one. Epic Genius (talk) 16:18, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
In the meantime, I've depopulated the South Brooklyn category, and edited the South Brooklyn article, so that they reflect the source we currently have. (It's easy enough to repopulate the cat if necessary.) BMK (talk) 16:29, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I did not find anything except promotional advertising for South Brooklyn saying so, but I did make a new category, Category:Cobble Hill, Brooklyn. Epic Genius (talk) 21:54, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I saw that you added it to a number of articles, but I didn't realize you had just created it. That sounds like an excellent solution. BMK (talk) 22:00, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Something called the South Brooklyn Local Development Corporation exists, but it's almost entirely focused on Smith Street - in fact, their not-very-informative website is slugged "Smith Street - Shops, Restaurants, Bars Singles, Couples and Family Living". There are a few recent references to "South Brooklyn" in the NY Times, and they include subjects located in Gowanus (also [1]), and Carroll Gardens, but nothing of the volume necessary to show that "South Brooklyn" has much currency in recent colloquial use. The South Brooklyn Marine Terminal is in Sunset Park, so that's a geographical description. BMK (talk) 23:32, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This article on school rezoning in South Brooklyn is referring to Windsor Terrace. BMK (talk) 23:37, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And this use of "South Brooklyn" is about Besonhurst. BMK (talk) 23:38, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
This article about a power outage in 2014 is about Dyker Heights, Gowanus, Park Slope, and Bay Ridge. BMK (talk) 23:41, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
South Brooklyn Community High School is in Red Hook. This stuff is all over the map. BMK (talk) 23:41, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Crossfit South Brooklyn is in Gowanus. BMK (talk) 23:45, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think the lesson of all this stuff is that the Encyclopedia is correct that "South Brooklyn" is a very imprecise term. Sometimes it appears to be used relative to its historical meaning (i.e. Red Hook, Carroll Gardens and Park Slope) sometimes about neighborhoods that border on those neighborhoods (Gowanus, Cobble Hill, Windsor Terrace), and sometimes it's used strictly geographically (Sunset Park, Bensonhurst).

It's probably best to avoid using the term whenever possible. BMK (talk) 23:45, 4 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, I just saw these links and noticed the widely varying usages of these terms. Thank you. I'll try to avoid it, but "South Brooklyn" is a historical term for the peninsula including Red Hook, Carroll Gardens, and Gowanus. Epic Genius (talk) 00:31, 5 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I started a new thread at Talk:South Brooklyn about this before seeing this one. I would copy over, but since the one I started concerns how to improve the article in general (and would apply to categories, I suppose), I assume leave it there. --— Rhododendrites talk \\ 01:13, 5 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
We should probably close down this discussion in favor of the one over there. BMK (talk) 01:57, 5 February 2015 (UTC)[reply]
