"This appointment was in two respects a decisive moment in his career; on the one hand it made him give his whole attention to a subject for which he was admirably suited, but to which he had so far given only a secondary interest; and on the other hand, it threw him into politics." This sentence looks vague and confusing to me. Is the subject for which he is admirably suited history?
