The surname is Schrank, not Paula[edit]

I can say with definity that this "guys" surname is Schrank. I am a direct decendant of this man, and I was born in Munich, Germany with the surname Schrank. The Paula part of the name comes from Austria where the Schrank family originally was from. The title "von" in Austria indicated nobility, however Austria dropped the title from our family name in 1919, when they abolished all indicators of nobility in family names.

So, the translation to English would "loosely" be ... "Franz (noble of paula) Schrank". I have also seen the spelling of his name as Francisci de Paula Schrank (I am assuming this is Italian) ... which would translate to "Franz (of paula) Schrank". And I have found yet another spelling of ... Franz de Paula von Schrank, which would mean Franz (the paula noble) Schrank. ^[1]

In German, it is Franz (von Paula) Schrank. Proper English translation would be Franz (Paula von) Schrank. Had he died after 1919, he would have been simply, Franz Schrank. The comment above is not fully correct. Franz von Paula Schrank was a Catholic priest and is not likely to have had offspring. He was named for Francis of Paola http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Francis_of_Paola (and not, say, for Francis of Assisi) hence the unusual looking name. He also was not of the nobility. That Lady's A Guy[edit]

I have always mused about the (female) surname Paula. Now, de:Franz von Paula Schrank resolves this but is still a most unusual name - loosely translated to the English naming scheme, it would probably be "Frank Cuppert [Lord or some such title] of Paula". Weird, but not impossible.

For one thing, the correct name of the guy needs to be clarified. Note the Talk page on de:; their source was apparently fr: Wikipedia. Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 21:35, 5 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
