8.8 inch IRS axle was introduced in the 1989 model year of Ford Thunderbird Supercoupe/Mercury Cougar XR7. The Thunderbird/Cougar had a steel IRS housing with an alloy inspection plate. The alloy 8.8 IRS housing was introduced on the 1993 Lincoln Mark VIII
