I disagree with the proposed merge[edit]

I disagree with the proposed merge. In American English, the foodservice and catering industries overlap but are still distinct. Foodservice broadly connotes everything from a professionally catered corporate event serving the finest delicacies to an ordinary prison cafeteria serving garbage. Catering generally connotes high-end or expensive foodservice, particularly in the corporate or private context. No one would use the term catering to refer to the institutional foodservice context. --Coolcaesar 01:46, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not simply a North American encyclopaedia, though, is it? - Just zis  Guy, you know? [T]/[C] AfD? 23:18, 14 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No. But on the other hand, a large part of its audience is North American and it makes no sense to conflate two terms which are strongly distinct in American English. Even if you can find evidence that the terms are synonymous in another dialect, the dialect distinction can simply be noted in both articles with appropriate cross-references. See freeway and expressway for an example of how to treat words whose meaning is in dispute even within American English. --Coolcaesar 02:49, 15 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I Agree with the disagreement[edit]

Catering is a part of foodservice. The foodservice entry should be modified so the distinction is clear.

In the UK, "Foodservice" is rare. Catering refers to all provision of food for consumption - even in prisons and schools! Dbfirs 12:33, 14 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Removed Ad[edit]

I removed two sentences at the end of the Table Service section that linked to essentially an ad for an e-learning software. 50.246.238.17 (talk) 16:41, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Good call. Thank you! --bonadea contributions talk 16:46, 19 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
