FlyingFlying (disambiguation) – The clear, obvious primary topic of "flying" is flight. So flying, I propose, should redirect there instead of being a disambiguation page. Relisted. BDD (talk) 20:32, 3 February 2014 (UTC) Red Slash 17:51, 20 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

  • Oppose – no case has been made for why this term with so many meanings should have a primarytopic grab. Dicklyon (talk) 06:40, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose: Aviation seems, if not a primary topic candidate itself, at least significant enough to disqualify Flight from primary topic status. Keep the dab page at the basename title: then everyone can be offered the article they want just one click away. PamD 14:00, 21 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, since aviation is a subtopic of flight. Once the conceptually related senses are taken into account, all that remains are the titles of comparatively insignificant songs, albums, and similar works. bd2412 T 01:48, 23 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, a "solution in search of a problem"; and aviation is not a subtopic of flight. Aviation is a field of human endeavour, which involves flight among other things. YSSYguy (talk) 22:51, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
    • Are you saying that aviation is not a kind of flight? Is aviation a kind of flying? The title, Aviation, does not contain the word "Flying" in it, so does it belong on this page at all? bd2412 T 22:54, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The page starts with "Flying may refer to". A person may type "flying" as a search term when s/he wants to know about aviation - that is the reason WP has these pages. Aviation is an umbrella term, like "warfare", "commerce" or "mining". It involves, but is not limited to, flying. YSSYguy (talk) 23:46, 27 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I would assume that if someone types in "flying" to find out about aviation, they are looking for some aspect of aviation that has to do with "flight", rather than some non-flight related aspect of aviation. Remember, also, that this is not a redirect we are talking about, but a disambiguation page. For people coming to this page, even those looking for the general topic on flight, they must still search this page to find their topic. Since aviation is mentioned in flight (albeit perhaps a bit low on the page), if this title were to redirect to "flight", everyone who was looking for that article would need to look no further, while those looking for "aviation" would only have to look on the page, as they do now. I would go further and suggest that if this page were moved and redirected as proposed, we would add a hatnote right at the top of Flight saying, "for mechanical flight, see Aviation, for other uses, see Flying (disambiguation)", which would make aviation even more accessible than it is now. bd2412 T 02:20, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose - when I think of when someone would be using a link to "flying", it comes closer to what is listed on the flying page than that of the page Flight. --Rushton2010 (talk) 22:25, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose. "Flying" may refer equally to the concept of flight, or to the practice of aviation; it also has many subsiduary uses. Choosing one of the main uses over the other is somewhat arbitrary, and will serious impede the ability of editors to disambiguate the many uses of the term. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:28, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

'Flying' in phrases[edit]

Hi, I came across the term flying bishop just now, and wondered whether it would be suitable for inclusion on this page, along with ~ buttress, ~ picket, ~ Scotsman, ~ fox etc. Maybe there are too many of them. Or maybe there is another similar dab page where they belong which I haven't thought of. >MinorProphet (talk) 01:46, 29 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
