Does this work? Is anyone doing it? How do you dispose of the bag of broken glass heavily mixed with mercury sulfide, unreacted mercury ? Does this reaction spontaneously work at room temperature? --Wtshymanski (talk) 20:46, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

reuse[edit]

What are the REUSEs of these lamps? In particular, why can "used" and un-installed standard bulbs often be made to work again if you fiddle around with swapping them? How much life is left typically when removed? How long do they usually go on working when re-used?-96.233.20.34 (talk) 14:05, 24 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

It's a classic tradeoff between the cost of labor and the cost of new tubes. I've seen "hard-nosed business analysis" used to justify mass replacement of near-end-of-life tubes as saving money compared to individually replacing lamps as they burn out. Unsurprisingly, these analyses are sponsored by companies that want to sell more tubes, or the services of mass replacement. I don't know of any studies showing contrary results, but you're welcome to search for them. Reify-tech (talk) 14:59, 24 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The somewhat purely tech question here is, why does a standard F40T12 tube which has become dim in original installation start to work at apparent full brightness when swapped around, and how much extra life can typically be obtained thereby?
The pragmatic questions are, when tubes are replaced en masse, at what point is that typically done, and how many hours of life are thus obtained, vs. theoretical/ideal life? The pros and cons of such standard practices would be an interesting but somewhat separate matter.-96.233.20.34 (talk) 16:03, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
These are somewhat interesting questions, but why don't you research them yourself and find some WP:RS? Reify-tech (talk) 17:58, 28 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
