My Thoughts[edit]

Hello, I'm working on an assignment for a college mass communications class, our first assignment is to critique an article and present our thoughts to the talk page. The page looks good so far and will make a good jumping off point for future expansion. I do think the article could be improved with the addition of some more info on modern feature film and more detail on the expansion and rise of film. Maybe talk about how the concept of a feature has changed over time, I know in the U.S. for instance early movie theaters were common criminal hangouts. The movie industry started to change the content of it's films to attract more general audiences, I'm sure there are lots of other details like this that have far reaching consequences throughout film history and connect to the industry today. we could also talk about production techniques and the changes and improvements made over time, and maybe look in to how the corpritization of the industry has changed the meaning of the term over time or it might not have had any effect. maybe I'm getting a bit ahead of myself. New Additions[edit]

I just finished adding a new section and two paragraphs focused on Technological improvements mad in film making techniques as well a picture I found on the Wiki commons website. First dramatic feature[edit]

"Defined by length, the first dramatic feature film was the Australian 60-minute film The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906)." I have completed the "merge". Very little content was worth keeping from feature length, as it was all either uncited or repeated in this article already. The only content that was not transferred, but which might have value is the following two paragraphs:

Television movies and direct-to-videos may also be feature length. An episode of a TV series that has been extended may also be feature length. Such feature-length episodes are usually series pilots, holiday specials, or season finales.

Five-reel features became common practice in the industry in 1915. During the silent era a one-reel short ran for an average of 10 minutes, and a two-reeler (usually a comedy) for 20 minutes, thus a feature was around 50 minutes or more. Possibly due to competition from television, the average length of feature film increased from around 90 minutes in 1931 to almost 120 minutes in 1960.^{[citation needed]}

Arbitrary 'Length'[edit]

In the header, it states that most feature-length films are between 75 and 210 minutes. Those numbers feel very arbitrary, and there is no source.

In my experience, films over 3 hours are relatively rare, and films under 75 minutes are still relatively common. 'Between 1 and 3 hours' or 'Between 60 and 180 minutes' would make more sense to me, although I don't really care what the exact numbers are, I just care that they're chosen for a reason.
