Boric acid eye wash?[edit]

When I was a boy, growing up in New York, in the early 1940's, I remember that a mild solution of Boric Acid was commonly used as an eye wash but when I mentioned this to an Opthamologist recently he told me that he had never heard of such a thing ( he was 20-30 years younger than me)
