Logo licence[edit]

The file "EUF logo.jpg" has a description which reads: "Permission: To all EUF members", while the uploader (Zetii) claims to be the author and releases it under GFDL and CCA 3.0. This raises two concerns:

  • While the logo is not the one used on the website, it may still be copyright - has verification been made (e.g. by OTRS) that it is released under the licences shown?
  • Does the restriction on "permissions" contradict the licence?

IMHO the "Permission to all EUF members" just means that only members can use it to claim the membership. (eg. on their website, documents, licenses, etc) -- Basilicofresco (msg) 11:41, 5 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
If that is the case then it clearly can't be licensed under GFDL & CCA 3.0 - "In short: you are free to distribute and modify the file as long as you attribute its author(s) or licensor(s)". Yes, I agree - a non-free usage rationale makes sense for almost all logos, which really ought to remain the copyright of the organisation. At least it would mean that re-users of wikimedia content wouldn't have the right to do as they wish with someone else's logo. --RexxS (talk) 13:48, 7 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've uploaded a very small image of the logo as "EUF-logo.jpg", using a non-free content licence and fair-use rationale that I think will be acceptable. If you or anyone else has a larger image (up to about 400-500px as used for PADI), then please replace the tiny one. Europe or EU[edit]

Is the area covered by the EUF that of the European Union or all of Europe? At present the article talks about the EU, yet Norway (a non-EU country) is a member. Although CMAS Europe has its area of interest defined as the EU, the European RSTC (at http://www.rstc-eu.org/en/Home/Introduction/tabid/149/Default.aspx) states "The influence of these member organisations span all European countries as well as most of the Red Sea and the Maldives." --RexxS (talk) 11:08, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi RexxS, the EUF membership application (EUF Membership Application states that a prospective full member must be 'based in an EU/EEZ country'. I would assume this means a country in the European Union including its EEZ (in the case where an EU country has a EEZ).Cowdy001 (talk) 11:35, 27 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I suspect that they intended EEZ to mean European Economic Zone (i.e. the European Economic Area), not Exclusive economic zone, because having "a dedicated administrative headquarters based in an ... EEZ" doesn't make any sense - nobody has an HQ in the sea, which is the extra amount that an exclusive economic zone provides. I still can't see how the EUF can possibly be restricted to the European Union if Norway is a full member. Also the RSTC Europe simply isn't restricted to the EU according to its website, and our article shouldn't say that it is. --RexxS (talk) 04:54, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I would suspect that the EUF would like the cake to be as large as possible (i.e. lot of the French territory in tropical seas are nice places to dive). Can you tell what the correct term should be?Cowdy001 (talk) 06:21, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just found this template - [Supranational European Bodies] This is suggests that the territorial concerns of the EUF would align with the both European Economic Area and European Union Customs Union. Also,the status of the Russian Federation as an EUF observer may support this conclusion. Cowdy001 (talk) 06:48, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
My recommendation would be to use the loose term 'Europe'. For the EUF and for the RSTC Europe, the list of members of different classes seems to defy a precise definition. CMAS Europe, of course does have a precise definition given in 2.1 and 2.2 of its Articles of Association, where "Real Members" are "national representatives of the Underwater activities in a European country member of the European Union", and "Joining Members" are "national representatives of the Underwater activities in an European country that is not a member of the European Union" - between the two, it also seems to consider the whole of Europe within its purview, and I think we should reflect that in our article. --RexxS (talk) 18:22, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
European Union has been replaced with Europe while the CMAS Europe article has been edited to reflect the definition of 'Real Members' and 'Joining Members'. A review of the WRSTC article identified no immediate need for upgrading.Cowdy001 (talk) 21:35, 28 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
