Unclear how it works[edit]

Is the engine order telegraph an electrical or mechanical device? Does the bell in the engine room ring because a signal is sent through a wire, or because a cord is pulled? 68.5.46.193 (talk) 20:19, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Both. Early ones were mechanical wire, later ones were electric. The first electric machines used pulses (telegraph technology) and a form of escapement. Recent ones used synchros. I presume that modern stuff is now digital. Andy Dingley (talk) 20:44, 17 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
