University of Mississippi (Fall 2009)[edit]

We are editing this page as part of an english assignment to help improve our writing skills. We decided that this film page needs alot of work. We are going to lengthen the plot summary, add the soundtrack section, production section to include when and where is was filmed and how much money was made. We also wanted to add a reception section to show the viewers about awards that were won. We also thought that the introduction should be elaborated on, and there needs to be more external links/references. Film Plot Size[edit]

Perspective details wanted.[edit]

The article states: "The movie makes heavy use of forced perspective to exaggerate the size of Buddy compared to all the other elves." Are there sources that describe further how the film makers accomplished this? Maybe even illustrative photos from which to create diagrams? It's a fascinating subject. Why were these items deleted?

1. Cancelled Sequel

Apparently, Will Ferrell was originally offered the role of buddy for a sequel following the film's success. However, when Ferrell backed out and decided not to return for a sequel all plans were cancelled as the studio felt that they couldn't make a sequel without him.

2. Elf was the topic of conversation more than a couple of time on the Howard Stern show because of cast member Artie Lange's involvement with the film.

Untrue? Uncited? Poorly written? The reference to the radio show was insignificant? (The "apparently" would have needed to go, anyhow.) I don't see a given reason for the changes.

Also, regarding: "Papa Elf names his son William, but for short he calls him Buddy." - when the baby is found, he is wearing diapers that say something to the effect "Buddy (something) Diapers". The elves assume that his name is Buddy. I don't remember any explanation of Papa Elf naming him William Hobbs, Buddy for short. What scene included that information?

Further edits[edit]

I have seen many edit summaries caused by anonymous users in the plot section. Furthermore, vandalism has happened too often in this article. As I noted in 2016 above, somebody makes false claims about the name of the Elf character being "William". From the History, this has been going on intermittently for years. Jim Carrey as Buddy?[edit]

I just watched an episode of The Holiday Movies That Made Us on Netflix about the making of Elf. It had interviews with the writer and some producers. For years there have been allegations that Jim Carrey was originally going to star, but the show on Netflix doesn't say anything about this. Other than Will Ferrell, the only other person they mentioned that was considered to play Buddy the Elf was Chris Farley.

There have been online articles alleging that Carrey was almost Buddy, but they don't provide any sources. A few cite IMDb, which is where I first heard these allegations 15 years ago. Not only is that not a reliable source, said trivia was recently updated to say that the Carrey casting suggestion was a rumor.

Origin of term[edit]

“I love Lucy” based in the 50’s used the term cotton headed ninny….. this term is a racial slur in reference to the Afro/black people. I’m sorry but this was not first used by will Ferrell……

Gimbels[edit]

Did Buddy wind up at Gimbels because the ESB guards (sarcastically) told him to, or was he drawn to it by its elaborate Christmas decorations?
