Other gases[edit]

Does this type of compressor work for other gases like oxygene, chlorine, helium, etc?--109.166.206.2 (talk) 15:56, 20 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]


In principle yes to reactive gases (never He) but in practice not - it requires oxidation of hydrogen gas into protons, transportation of those protons, and re-reduction into hydrogen gas. For hydrogen (only) these reactions are fast and do not have a major energy barrier.

The analogous processes for oxygen or chlorine could in principle occur with the other type of ion-exchange membrane and a decent catalyst but would be incredibly inefficient compared to a normal compressor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hrethric (talkcontribs) 02:12, 29 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
