NPOV dispute on Protests section[edit]

The section that is currently titled Protests was originally introduced in Feb. 22 2012 as "Forceful Eviction and Violent Displacement". As I introduced the original title, I have reflected about it and believe that it could be changed for "Eviction" but not just "Protests". Also, the people who appear in the quoted video are local peasants, fishermen and miners who inhabited the region and also worked in the region. So they are the affected party in the eviction, and not just protesters.

Justification: The quoted source (Revista Semana) has the following heading for this report (in Spanish): "Con este provocador título un video colgado en Youtube muestra impactantes imágenes y testimonios de los afectados por el desalojo que realizó la fuerza pública en las obras de construcción de la represa 'El Quimbo' a orillas del río Magdalena." See the quoted reference: http://www.semana.com/nacion/video-gobierno-no-quiere-veamos/172493-3.aspx.

A translation of that heading would be: "With this provocative title, a video posted in Youtube shows shocking images and testimonials by the people affected by the eviction carried out by the Public Force in the building of the 'El Quimbo' dam in the shores of the Magdalena River".

The source hence confirms that the testimonials and images are from the affected people, along with witnesses from the region.

The writer NortyNort, who removed this content also suggests that the name of the Video is not appropriate. The comments in one of the changes by NortyNort are "clean-up...these people were protesters as well...and if the gov't really didn't want you too see it, the police wouldn't have just walked past the guy with a camera".

Unfortunately the title of the video was chosen by the producer, and even if it would be 'provocative' as the source semana.com calls it, it is the choice of the author, which I believe should be respected as a valid audiovisual reference.

My suggestion to improve the neutrality of this document would be as follows:

1- To replace the current title for the section 'Protests' with 'Eviction'.

2- To reinstate the original text in that section:

On February 21st, 2012, Revista Semana published [11] in its website a report that makes reference to a Video produced by Bladimir Sánchez, a Communicator from the Huila Department. This video, available in Youtube [12] since Feb. 20th, 2012 and titled "¡ÉL VÍDEO QUE EL GOBIERNO COLOMBIANO NO QUIERE QUE VEAMOS!" (The video that the Colombian Government does not want us to see) documents the events that took place between Feb. 14th and 15th, 2012 during the eviction of the local fishermen and miners by the Colombian Police Force. Several local dwellers were injured by the excessive use of force demonstrated by the Police during these events. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Andrescj (talkcontribs) 08:19, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello Andrescj. What the police broke up were protesters of relocation and it appeared the used non-lethal force. I don't disagree most protestors were residents of that area. Relocation is normal when constructing a dam and so are protests. I think this is significant and should be included in the article because the police had to disperse the protesters. The title of the video is unnecessary for the article and so is "The video that the Colombian Government does not want us to see". This is an encyclopedia, not a soapbox or protest page. When writing an article, the viewpoint and bias of the source must be considered. If a reader is interested in seeing the video, they can see it through the citation's link. The title of the actual video doesn't add encyclopedic value. As far as the section title, I thought "Protests" sounded better than the previous one. Just about every large dam forcefully evicts (relocates) people. No one appeared to die and they used non-lethal force to disperse people they were ordered to. I'm not saying it isn't a sad scenario but it is what it is.--NortyNort (Holla) 10:53, 23 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
