A bit brief?[edit]

This article seems a bit lacking in detail, given that Woodward is a reasonably well known actor on both sides of the Atlantic. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 82.120.226.202 (talk) 12:24, 22 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Mystified...[edit]

Why does "Ewar Woowar" redirect to this page? Mooncow (talk) 20:47, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It refers to the joke (mentioned in the main article): Q. Do you know why Edward Woodward has so many Ds in his name? A. Because otherwise he'd be called "Ewar Woowar". Not sure whence the joke originated, but it was used on the BBC TV program QI. Mesdale (talk) 13:23, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Comedian Joe Pasquale used to do that "Ewar Woowar" joke however I cannot say if he was its originator. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.26.102.106 (talk) 00:13, 28 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

'He said: "Judi Dench and I were in a musical at the Criterion long ago and they had dayglo letters for the first time and my name was up there, but someone took all the Ds out, so she called me Ewar Woowar, and still does."'

"The Wicker Man (2006 film)" cameo rejection citation needed[edit]

The article states:

"Woodward was offered a cameo role in the 2005 remake, but declined, even though he said he thought the script was very well written."

The only quotation I can find from Mr. Woodward is that he was "surprisingly impressed by the quality of the script". (on IMDB)

Which I read as an evasive way of saying he that thought that the script was bad. I may have interpretted that incorrectly. Is there a verifiable source for his opionion of the script?

Not a place for story synopses[edit]

This is a biographical article, not a place to recount plotlines. I removed the detailed synopsis of Eastenders accordingly. 68.146.81.123 (talk) 05:14, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Is Elmwood School really in Wallingford, or actually in Wallington? Wallington would be logical, given the other places mentioned in that paragraph. --Redrose64 (talk) 15:44, 12 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Somebody's plumped for Wallington, I see. We still need a citation though; and I am aware that there are websites stating "Wallingford" - but do a google search for "Elmwood School Wallingford" and the only hits are on Edward Woodward pages. I really do think that at one point, somebody confused Wallingford for Wallington, and it's since been copied everywhere as unverified "fact". --Redrose64 (talk) 16:56, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
The article is a dab with a redlink to a school in Wallingford, Oxfordshire, but no entry for Wallington. If there is not a school of that name in Wallingford, the Elmwood School article should be corrected. Lkjhgfdsa 0 (talk) 21:52, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That dab was created just four days ago, and I expressed concern about it at the time. I happen to live in Didcot, which is quite near Wallingford, Oxfordshire - both are within South Oxfordshire District Council. I know of no school in the area named "Elmwood" or "Elm Wood", and can't find one on the local authority's website. The point is, all of Woodward's other education was in the Croydon/Sutton area, so why would he move some seventy miles for one particular school and then move back again? One possibility is boarding school; but that is extremely unlikely for somebody of his age and social background. However, right in between Croydon and Sutton is a place called Wallington which to my mind seems far more likely than Wallingford. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:19, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Is or was there an Elmwood School in Wallington, London? Lkjhgfdsa 0 (talk) 22:39, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
There certainly is within Croydon; whether it's in Wallington I'm not sure. I've traced the addition of the school to the article to this edit. Bit difficult to ask an IP editor what their source was. --Redrose64 (talk) 22:55, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth, Wikipedia says George Arthur Knowland and Laura Ashley attended Elmwood School in Croyden. To resolve where this man went to school, find a reliable source that says where. --Una Smith (talk) 23:09, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This article states that Elmwood School is in Hackbridge near Wallington, London. However, neither Hackbridge or Wallington are in Croydon. If the article states he went to Elmwood School, it should state the school is in Croydon. Lkjhgfdsa 0 (talk) 00:06, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Elmwood SEcondary School 81.101.165.12 (talk) 19:15, 2 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that none of the above discussion is relevant to where this man went to school. That needs to be established from a reliable source, such as a published interview or a biography. --Una Smith (talk) 00:16, 17 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Whether useful or not, I used to go to an Elmwood School which is not a great distance away from Croydon. It is in the Dulwich/Gipsy Hill area which is about 10 minutes drive through Streatham. I believe that Elm_Wood_Primary_School is the school but can't be definitely sure of it. It was established in 1929 so it would have been around when he was at School. 78.86.230.62 (talk) 02:47, 20 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
He went to Elmwood School, Wallington, according to both The Independent and Irish Times. References added. Lachrie (talk) 15:29, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Elmwood County Secondary School attended by Edward Woodward was in Hackbridge, near Wallington Surrey. Definitely NOT Wallingford. I know because I attended the same school after Edward, but he was often talked about. Jeff Beck the musician also went there. Unfortunately the school has since been demolishes to make way for housing. 2A00:23C5:8D08:1:70D2:4AC:D175:863C (talk) 17:02, 4 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The last statement is correct - Roy Budd musician was also an ex-pupil. Mr Clement Wilson English teacher is still alive and over 100 years old (my father in law). I taught there in the late 1970s - it closed in 1980. Now housing. Ian Lambert — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.71.195.121 (talk) 08:34, 28 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Singer?[edit]

The lead, infobox and category state he was a singer. If he was a professional singer, the article needs to give some details of that. If he wasn't, it shouldn't be in the article at all. Lkjhgfdsa 0 (talk) 15:11, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

My TV encyclopedia says he sang on several variety shows in the early 1970s, and he did actually have a minor UK chart hit in January 1971. I'll add this unless somebody else beats me to it. Rodhullandemu 19:55, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Discography: the "Recording artist" section states that Woodward recorded 29 total sung or spoken-word titles. Such a prolific recording career demands at least a some examples of his work, if not a complete "discography". Any contribution as to recorded album titles are needed and welcomed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.138.205.143 (talk) 16:21, 11 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Younger daughter[edit]

The years of his other three children's births are stated in the article, but hers is not. Which year was she born? Lkjhgfdsa 0 (talk) 18:15, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

1983 —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.161.64.89 (talk) 18:20, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Does anyone have a better ref for her year of birth than IMDb? Lkjhgfdsa 0 (talk) 19:32, 28 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Death and funeral[edit]

Does anyone know his cause of death or any funeral details? All I've read about his death is that he had a number of illnesses including pneumonia; all I've read about his funeral are jokes. Lkjhgfdsa 0 (talk) 19:32, 28 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Films[edit]

Mr. Woodward also had a supporting role in the 1985 George C. Scott version of A Christmas Carol as the Ghost of Christmas Present.SnyderEDSnyder (talk) 03:13, 13 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Pronunciation-needed tag?[edit]

There is no reason to have a pronunciation-needed tag on this article. There is no ambiguity about the pronunciation, and no other Woodward article (see Woodward (surname), Woodward) has pronunciation. If anyone feels that a pronunciation tag is needed, per WP:BRD please make your case here and establish consensus that there is any ambiguity or confusion about the pronunciation of Edward Woodward's name. Thank you. Softlavender (talk) 01:54, 9 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

*The name has two pronunciations: /ˈwʊdərd/ and /ˈwʊdwərd/. It wouldn't hurt to know the correct one in this case. If it comforts, I can add a tag to the surname page, too. —  AjaxSmack  03:59, 11 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You haven't given any evidence that the name has two pronunciations, or that there has ever been any confusion about the pronunciation of Woodward's name. Until you do, and also establish a consensus that a pronunciation label is needed or warranted here, the article should stay as it stands. Softlavender (talk) 04:09, 11 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if it's that obvious, then how is it pronounced? (See here or here for the potential for confusion.) I'm not sure how you can prove a negative in this case, i.e. that no one has ever been confused, but a pronunciation guide is a very small addition that is used frequently at Wikipedia to prevent potential confusion. (e.g.,Mary Gauthier, John Boehner). I'm not sure that consensus is needed for every article edit, but if having the pronunciation in the article is that unnerving, I'm not going to press the issue.  AjaxSmack  04:42, 11 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Again, you need to provide reliable-source evidence that there is more than one official way to pronounce Woodward and that there might ever be any confusion. Your first example is of a different name, and your second isn't even admissable or relevant. Softlavender (talk) 05:25, 11 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't aware that English even had official pronunciations, but since it exercises you this much, I'll drop it.  AjaxSmack  05:38, 11 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
