Proposed merge with List of Dune planets

I was going to AfD it, but noticed the several references about real world items being named after the fictional ones. Those can certainly go in something like a "Legacy" section or however it would be worded. I in no way think anything other than those references should be merged. Using this because I feel someone will just unredirect it if I BOLD merge the references. TTN (talk) 21:01, 10 November 2019 (UTC)

I tend to agree that List of Dune planets is very in-universe. I've created the Legacy section you suggested here, and the Titan nomenclature was actually already mentioned and cited in the lead. Any other notable tidbits are likely already mentioned elsewhere. I'd like to thoughtfully update the many redirects to this list, and assuming we don't get any objections here, I'd be happy to boldly redirect the list itself.— TAnthonyTalk 18:42, 11 November 2019 (UTC)
Seeing as it's been just shy of two weeks with no other responses, I'd say it'd be fine to redirect it in the next day or so. Looking at "what links here", I'm not actually seeing any redirects, so it may be helpful to create any if there are any plausible search terms in the current list. TTN (talk) 21:00, 23 November 2019 (UTC)
Yes, there are a bunch of Dune planet redirects in Category:Dune location redirects, and I've already changed their destinations case-by-case from the list to whichever of the Dune-related articles I felt were most appropriate.— TAnthonyTalk 06:03, 24 November 2019 (UTC)
Redirect of the list is  Done.— TAnthonyTalk 06:07, 24 November 2019 (UTC)

The Butlerian Jihad: Is it only AI that was banned or all computing tech?

Because according to this Quora entry,

“[...] But when the books refer to “thinking machines” and “computers” — they were referring specifically to non-organic “artificial intelligence”. To prevent that from ever arising again, they banned the use of computers and especially networking computers more than needed.”

Probably there should be an {{efn}} for the Butlerian Jihad question. Gibranalnn (talk) 09:00, 1 August 2021 (UTC)

No Clarification Needed

Someone placed a "clarification needed" tag in the third paragraph: '...banned computers with artificial intelligence capabilities[clarification needed], referred in the saga as "thinking machines"...' It is utterly preposterous that further clarification is needed here, as it is self-explanatory. I am herewith removing the tag, and tightening the subsequent text. rowley (talk) 17:50, 12 April 2021 (UTC)

I believe you mean "I am forthwith removing the tag". "Herewith" means you are including something with or within a text -- quite the opposite. Oh and "utterly preposterous" is superfluously dramatic. Perhaps, "A case can easily be made that no further clarification is needed", and then you make the case, rather than appealing to high falutinisms. Jyg (talk) 07:16, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Where is the real world information?

This article is ridiculous. It's like fanfic. There are long descriptions of in-world chronologies, but where are the list of published books in real world, historical chronologies? How the writer changed with time. How the franchise was made into movies and games. Stop forcing in-world chronology on every-one, it's ridiculous, it's not the way it's meant to be consumed and it's not real world information. 80.99.221.82 (talk) 14:58, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

Seems like you didn't read much of the article. Plot and in-universe info is contained in a single (albeit long) section ("Plot arc"). There are at least FIVE other sections addressing some of the topics you mentioned, and more.— TAnthonyTalk 17:38, 28 October 2021 (UTC)

Descriptive error

The text reads "the desert planet Arrakis, known as Dune, which is the only natural source of the all-important spice melange" ...

To be precise, in the timeframe of the original novel, Dune is the only source of melange, period. The word "natural" anticipates developments later in the series, and so the use of that word is in error. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:410:200:2C80:F765:33B2:4647:D11C (talk) 06:52, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

I agree, I'll fix that. Thanks!— TAnthonyTalk 18:03, 18 December 2021 (UTC)

Atreides family tree

Many thanks to HeyZeusVictory888, who put a lot of effort into the comprehensive {{House Atreides family tree}}. However, I've removed it from the character articles to which it was added today so we can discuss it here. Fictional character trees exist at Wikipedia but I believe most have been deprecated as trivial, especially unsourced ones. I believe there were once some Dune character trees that have since been deleted for this reason. Also, this tree is (necessarily) gigantic, and is somewhat overwhelming in an article.— TAnthonyTalk 05:12, 14 December 2022 (UTC)

I have cut down the family tree to pretty much only include characters with their own Wikipedia articles, with additional generational notes on the last members of House Atreides covered in a note, to no longer be overwhelming in articles. What do you think? HeyZeusVictory888 (talk) 23:54, 14 December 2022 (UTC)
Wow thanks, it seems much more manageable now. I'd like to see if we have any other comments about the triviality etc., but I don's see the harm in restoring it to the articles for characters listed.— TAnthonyTalk 04:03, 18 December 2022 (UTC)
You’re welcome! I will restore the template to the character articles now then. HeyZeusVictory888 (talk) 19:39, 18 December 2022 (UTC)
For the sake of ongoing discussion I'm providing a link to a previous discussion (result: no consensus) of Game of Thrones-related family trees that include arguments that may be applicable here.— TAnthonyTalk 22:52, 21 December 2022 (UTC)

Mildly surprised this is not notable, but no, I am not seeing any reviews. ISFDb has nothing. Ping @Cunard - if you find me sources, I could stub it. Not a priority, just saying. Also @TAnthony in case you'd have some sources for that. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 07:40, 29 July 2023 (UTC)

Hi Piotrus (talk · contribs). Here are some sources about the book Songs of Muad'Dib:

  1. "After All These Years, Songs of Muad'Dib: The Poetry of Frank Herbert, and Tramp Royale". Science Fiction Chronicle. Vol. 13, no. 7. April 1992. p. 27. ISSN 0195-5365. Retrieved 2023-07-29 – via Internet Archive.

The magazine provides two sources of coverage about the book. The magazine notes: "The poetry collection by Herbert includes works related and unrelated to Dune, despite the title, including some apparently not available elsewhere. Some of it is interesting, but Herbert's talents were in more conventional prose."

  2. "Songs of Muad'Dib review". Locus. Vol. 28. May 1992. pp. 27+.

The review is mentioned on page 2387 of Book Review Index: A Master Cumulation 1985–1992. I could not find a copy of the magazine online. I recommend asking for a copy of the source at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request.

  3. "Songs of Muad'Dib review". Voice of Youth Advocates. Vol. 15. August 1992. p. 189.

The review is mentioned on page 2387 of Book Review Index: A Master Cumulation 1985–1992. I could not find a copy of the magazine online. I recommend asking for a copy of the source at Wikipedia:WikiProject Resource Exchange/Resource Request.

@Cunard Nice! That should be enough to create an article. I'll ask at RERR about the sources soon. Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 12:13, 29 July 2023 (UTC)
