Circle thing[edit]

What does "circle thing" mean in the bass drum legs section?

Good question, but that text seems to have been removed. I don't know either, it's not a term I've ever heard in half a century of drumming! But drummers of all levels of experience and knowledge are exceptionally bold in updating Wikipedia articles as best they can, and we encourage this. Please sign your posts on talk pages. Probably the subsection on mounting a floor tom belongs in the drum parts section alongside bass drum legs rather than in the stands and holders section. Either way they belong together.

But the division is not all that clear... the brackets on a bass drum that support tom arms and cymbal holders are parts of the bass drum, but holders of the toms and cymbals. Hmmm....

Pearl tom mounts[edit]

I note this edit a year ago replaced 20mm with 22mm and/or 7/8".

We assume good faith but the facts that it's still the only edit from this contributor and that they marked the edit minor and left no edit summary don't inspire confidence. You need to be logged in to flag an edit as minor of course, and this is clearly not a minor edit, and this behaviour is consistent with an attempt to hide deliberate vandalism, and hard but not impossible to explain otherwise.

I've always called them 20mm, but if they're actually 7/8" then that's 0.875" (exactly) and 22.225mm (approx), which is probably enough to matter, it might depend a bit on the exact design of the mount and the metallurgical qualities of the bar (some brand X bars are really terribly soft, and some brand X mounts are really good at distorting soft bars - actually the Pearl Forum bars and mounts are among the worst, come to think of it, they don't even work well together - but that's why you buy the more expensive lines).

I guess the next thing is to measure a genuine Pearl mount and tom bar!

But even if they turn out to be closer to 7/8" than to 20mm, Wikipedia's policy is to use the terms as they appear in reliable sources, rather than the terms we think are correct. Hmmm....

My suspicion is that in some drum shops they're called 7/8", but that 20mm is both the accurate measurement and the standard name. Watch this space, or better still comment. WP:OR is explicitly permitted on talk pages (but not in articles of course). Andrewa (talk) 17:45, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]
