Engineering Wonder?: I seem to remember that a year or so after the first tube of the Downtown Tunnel was opened it was designated as one of the Seven Engineering Wonders of the Modern World. I think the reason was that it was the first underwater tunnel ever built by sinking and connecting pre-formed concrete sections rather than being dug. I'm pretty sure there was an article in The Virginian-Pilot at the time about this.

I don't have the time or competence to track down citations for this, hopefully someone does.
