Discant v. Descant?[edit]

To merge Discant into Descant given the overlapping discussion; differences best discussed on one page. Klbrain (talk) 20:15, 15 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why are there 2 Wikipedia articles on what are merely two versions of the same word? The OED lists 11 historical forms of "descant," and discant has no particular priority in the quotations provided to illustrate it.

There is to be sure a historical development in the meaning of descant, and that should be an important part of an article that traces the term from its emergence in polyphony to descanting above hymn tunes, which is how it's best known today.

I am going to post this same message on the Descant talk page to see if there is a will to bring this material together in a more logical and meaningful form. KC 10:43, 1 April 2016 (UTC) KC 10:43, 1 April 2016 (UTC)

I agree with the question posed above, though it's 5 years later. I'll add a proposed merge template to the header of both pages, since they're fundamentally the same (though this one is much harder to read as a layperson). —A garbage person (talk) 16:35, 8 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@A garbage person: The obvious solution is indeed to merge. Since the other one is apparently better written (as a musician, I'll assume I have some form of expert bias - although I note that this one here is mostly be about the medieval form of this); and since "descant" is more common in contemporary usage, that makes an obvious target. I'll redirect and put in the appropriate templates and time and effort when I have more energy to do so (so not tonight). Cheers, RandomCanadian (talk / contribs) 03:04, 4 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]
