I started to un-stub the article by revising it along the lines of the much longer Afrikaans-language version. It will be slow going, though... sorry, but I think readers are confused with the circulation here. Sê nou dit was moontlik om in ’n landwye peiling elke meerderjarige Suid-Afrikaner se mening oor ons land te verneem. Sê nou ons kon op dié manier vasstel wat Suid-Afrikaners beskou as die vyf beste en vyf slegste kenmerke van hul land. En sê nou ons kon die uitslag aan alle Suid-Afrikaners bekend maak.

Enige kans dat so ’n oefening heilsame gevolge vir ons land kan hê? Enige kans dat die onbetwiste meerderheidstandpunt wat so ingewin is, enigiemand sal aanspoor, óf noop, tot gefokuste en volgehoue optrede ter bestryding van die slegte en ter bevordering van die goeie?

Anders gestel: Enige kans dat Suid-Afrikaners in staat is om die vyf grootste euwels in ons land, en sy vyf grootste bates, by wyse van ’n nasionale konsensus te identifiseer? Enige kans dat Suid-Afrikaners hulle eendragtig, passievol en onstuitbaar sal toewy aan die bestryding van hierdie euwels, en die benutting van hierdie bates? Enige kans dat ’n charismatiese leier na vore sal tree wat individue, instellings en belangegroepe sal inspireer met sy of haar insig, visie en voorbeeld? Enige kans dat Suid-Afrikaners ná meer as 350 jaar erns sal maak met die ontsluiting en ontginning van hul land se ontsaglike potensiaal?

’n Juweel bly ’n juweel, al lê hy op ’n ashoop. Dis ook waar van ons land.

Die kernvrae is: Sien ons sy glans verdof? Wil ons hom regtig sien skitter? Wat gaan ons doen om hierdie edelsteen se briljantheid te ontsluit?

Gaan ons medeslypers, medepoleerders en medekurators wees, of reserveer ons vir ons die terugsitrol van waarnemers, beoordelaars en kommentators? Gaan die geslypte en gepoleerde Suid-Afrika ’n skitterende simbool wees van ons betrokkenheid by sy koestering, of gaan die ongeslypte en ongepoleerde Suid-Afrika ’n tragiese teken wees van ons aandeel in sy verwaarlosing?
