Desmogleins are proteins, and articles about DSG1,2,3 et 4 say they are genes !! Are the genes and proteins called the same ? I think it's an mistake, but if it is not, explain it please, it brings confusion ! Thanks, Tiphaine800 (talk) 20:45, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In short, proteins and genes are distinct things that often have interchangeable names (or at least people use them colloquially interchangeably). Proteins, of course, are encoded by genes, and so people use phrases like "gene function" and "protein function" to refer to the same thing.
