Merger[edit]

Proposal to Merge, reason: Article is better contained as section in larger article WP:MM#Text -Wizzard2k 22:51, 4 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

US bias, and sensitive to academic changes, is this really an encylopedia entry when I can't understand the meaning of it?

Based on the above comment I would like to propose that Design Technology become the larger/main article and that Design & Technology become a link off of it. The reason is that Design & Technology is a particular form of study and curriculum and only within certain countries, and only specific subjects are covered. One area in particular that I think needs to be taken into consideration is that of building design, construction and operation. Furthermore, though I think there are some similarities to Information Technology, IT, there are also some distinct differences. I would therefore like to propose the following definition for Design Technology, and let it then become the main article:

Design Technology is "the study, design, development, application, implementation, support and management of computer and non-computer based technologies for the express purpose of communicating, using various mediums, product design intent and constructability as well as to facilitate product operation and maintenance and to ultimately improve overall product design realization, construction, operation and maintenance ."

I believe such a definition is fairly expansive, encompassing and timeless. For instance it could just as easily be applied to DaVinci's Helicopter sketches (technologies: pen/pencil, medium: paper/papyrus, product: helicopter) as today’s virtual walkthroughs (technologies: VR software, medium: VR sensory gear, product: building), and tomorrows... Furthermore, it still encompasses Design & Technology. For instance take the subjects of Textiles or Resistive Materials and replace “product” with these and the definition still works.

I would sincerely like to know what others think and if there would be support for the above definition and modifications to these articles. Obi-wan (talk) 22:59, 15 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that this would be better off merged with another existing article. Would it work as a section in Information Technology? LogicalFinance33 (talk) 01:43, 20 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
