Der Blat or Der Blatt?[edit]

NOTE The discussion in this section was moved together with the article from the previous heading, "Der Blat".

The masthead of this publication uses the form Der Blatt, and that is also clearly the one most commonly used for Net-based references to it. Google reports 38,000 hits for "Der Blatt" but only 625 for "Der Blat". It is also accepted bibliographic practice to use the romanized form of a Yiddish title that is provided by the publisher in preference to any other transliteration. Therefore, although "der blat" is correct according to the YIVO rules, the masthead "Der Blatt" is the proper alternative for any purpose of bibliographic control, such as library cataloguing or encyclopedic reference. It is also somewhat ironic to see the YIVO alternative being used, nonetheless, for a publication that itself pays little heed to the YIVO rules. I would therefore like to suggest that this article be moved to the other heading. -- Futhark|Talk 11:25, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It is copyrighted material and cannot be posted on the WP. I'll see if I can find it somewhere else online and will post a link. I noted that sometime between my two most recent semiannual visits to the newstand on 13th Avenue (the latter being last week), the Algemeiner Journal began pointing the alefs in its own Yiddish banner. Do you know exactly when this happened and if it indicates any more extensive change in editorial policy? I wouldn't know—I have never seen the אלגעמיינער זשורנאל, with or without pointed alefs! Don't worry too much about the resolution of your scan; when you store it with a fair-use rationale, WP will automatically save a low-res image. Thanks! --Redaktor 18:05, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

While preparing the image of the front-page that now appears in this article, I noticed that every single page in the newspaper itself is headed "Der Blatt — דער בּלאַט". The considerations described in the first paragraph of this discussion page are thus all the more pressing. Unless there is any objection to my doing so (in the next day or two) I will be moving the article to the heading "Der Blatt", redirecting the present "Der Blat" to it, and adjusting all of the links to the article elsewhere in the Wikipedia. -- Futhark|Talk 09:31, 17 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
