Although the council houses were perhaps the most obvious alteration made to the village, I am surprised there is no mention of the more traditional buildings surrounding the village green. For example, a thatched cottage near the north-east corner is Orientalist Dr John Leyden's birthplace, the dictionary founder lived in a house on Main Street near the Cross Keys Inn, and there is the former Free Church of the 1840s on the east side of the green. And what,to an English visitor, is the meaning of the plaques on The Text House, which building, of three storeys and paimnted white, is so different from the rest of the Main Street buildings? 78.144.199.127 (talk) 15:03, 17 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
