Perhaps not noteworthy for someone not following what's happening in Turkey and the demonstrations following the incident and his death. For Turkey he is as noteworthy as the "Tank Man". He is a symbol of random police brutality and the oppression of the current government. 15 years old?[edit]

Article says: Berkin Elvan "was a 15-year-old Kurdish boy who was hit on the head..." The age question is, when he died, he was 15 years old. He was 14 years old when he was hit on the head by a gas canister. As we mention the incident which made him noteworthy, we should perhaps put his age at that moment, i.e. 14, isn't it? Ethnicity or nationality[edit]

Semsûrî, regarding this, since so many (likely the vast majority) of sources use "Turkish", I'm not sure that "Turkish" should be removed. WP:Verifiability states, "If reliable sources disagree, then maintain a neutral point of view and present what the various sources say, giving each side its due weight." For example, in the Mariah Carey article, we give two birth dates. But in the case of Elvan, it doesn't seem so much as a conflict between sources, but rather the fact that, like the Kurds article currently states, "Kurds are an ethnic group native to a mountainous region of Western Asia known as Kurdistan, which spans southeastern Turkey, northwestern Iran, northern Iraq, and northern Syria."

It's common practice for Kurds to sing Kurdish elegies at funerals, so it wouldn't make sense if she was ethnically Turkish. Nevertheless, it seems he was of mixed ethnicity which should be mentioned.[2] --Semsurî (talk) 19:47, 9 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Gülsüm Elvan is from Tunceli. This does not automatically make him Kurdish, because there are predominantly Zazas in Tunceli. Although the Kirmans claim that Zazas are also Kurds, their language is different. Gülsüm Elvan's lament in Zazaki does not make Berkin Elvan Kurdish. His father is neither Kırmançi nor Zaza, of Turkish origin. Since Berkin Elvan would not have been able to define himself as a Turk or a Zaza at the age of 14, he would not have been able to. Ethnicity cannot be said to be this or that. Nobody has the right to determine the ethnic origin of a person who is no longer alive, in line with his own ideology.
