History[edit]

I added some whaling material about Deadman's Island taken from David Bertao's book, The Portuguese Shore Whalers of California. This book has a detailed section on this whaling station. So far as is known, Henry Johnson was not a whaler at Deadman's Island. His station was at San Diego, but he did have a financial interest in the Deadman's Island one.Bartam (talk) 06:39, 27 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I added some material relating to the burial of some US soldiers on Deadman's Island in 1846 and added two references dealing with this in more detail. Bartam (talk) 03:25, 3 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

According one source, "The American Marines were buried in the military cemetery at the Presidio in San Francisco."

They were allegedly the first american soldiers killed in combat while fighting in California (were they also the last?) Enri999 (talk) 21:26, 4 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

logbook of the whaling ship the Atkin Adams[edit]

not sure if I have the correct island here - but here's the quote I saw

The 3rd mate strangely enough said it was nothing but the breakers dashing on Dead Mans Island. The Cap wore ship last night & managed to keep us back so that we only raised Tombez point this noon. Dead Mans Island has been plain in sight all day. Even its light house on the highest point of the Island is visible from deck. This island lies about 20 miles from Tombez. Expect to be in and drop anchor this P. M. Got up & ranged both cables yesterday afternoon & bent on to the larboard anchor, & this A. M. got the starboard anchor off the bows & bent on the light cable. Great numbers of hump backs breaching about us. Large bone shark run down by the ship.

That's from the logbook of the whaling ship the Atkin Adams (the entry is on september 1st 1859 - so about a year into the log), I've not read more than a small chunk but it looked like it might have some possible value for citations here. EdwardLane (talk) 08:36, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wrong island. Peru is quite some ways from California. ST1849 (talk) 21:39, 28 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
