Comment[edit]

I commented out two paragraphs of this article because they did not seem objective. Material quoting an expert saying the same thing would be fine. But stating it yourself doesn't seem like what an encyclopedia article should do. See Wikipedia:Neutral_point_of_view for further information.

Proper Titles[edit]

I have changed two "Mr."'s in this article back to "Elder." Whether the editor who changed the title from "Elder" to "Mr." in the first place is LDS or not, he or she should still have and show respect for the proper title of people in the Church, whether or not he or she is a member of the Church. Please use proper titles. --Jgstokes 22:08, 10 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, according to WP:MOS we shouldn't be using "Elder" or "Mr." After the first use of his name, it should just be "Bednar" and honorific titles are not used. I don't think it's a question of respect, it's just a matter of maintaining an encyclopedic tone and style. –SESmith 05:43, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Birthplace of Elder Bednar[edit]

For some ridiculous reason, in editing this page, the record of Elder Bednar's birthplace shifts all the time. The two main places cited for his birthplace are San Leandro and Oakland. I looked it up on the Church's official website, in his officially-endorsed-by-the-Church biography, and his birthplace was given as Oakland. Consequently, I undid the change to San Leandro. I place here the web address of the source for my information so that you'll know that's verifiable. But if it changes again, I have a feeling we have a vandal on our hands. Here's the site: http://www.lds.org/ldsnewsroom/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=f519e9734379f010VgnVCM100000176f620aRCRD&vgnextchannel=67509c643826e010VgnVCM1000004e94610aRCRD Hope this helps. --Jgstokes-We can disagree without being disagreeable 23:22, 15 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Aren't the two cities right next to each other? Maybe since his birth the boundaries have changed and what was once San Leandro has become Oakland or vice versa, and perhaps that's causing confusion. Anyway, I'd go with whatever the sources say. –SESmith 05:38, 16 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Different photo?[edit]

Is there any possibility of replacing the existing photo of Elder Bednar (speaking at a BYU business school commencement) with a different free photo showing him wearing a suit and tie?

I'm very seriously concerned here that a non-LDS reader seeing the existing photo in an article about Elder Bednar or the LDS Church — especially readers outside North America or western Europe with different cultural backgrounds — might not realize that the man is dressed as he is because he is speaking at a graduation and could come away with the misimpression that the robe he is wearing is standard Mormon clerical attire! Anything's POSSIBLE. In point of fact, at one point, this article was accompanied by a plain photo of him in suit and tie. However, that subsequently was changed with no explanation or discussion (as far as I know).
Your concerns are understandable. I never thought of that before. However, the issue with images is that it sometimes can be very difficult to find images that are not protected by copyright. Any images that ARE so protected become subject to a WP violation if they are included. I believe that with a little work, we could find such a photo, but I don't know where. Most of the ones that would be "standard" come from lds.org, which has a copyright policy in place that forbids the redistribution of such images in the public domain without prior authorization, which is difficult to obtain. If you are aware of a free image that WOULD be permissible for WP use, feel free to replace the current one. This issue has never been raised, but your objections make sense. So, go ahead and add such an image, if you know where to find one. --Jgstokes-We can disagree without being disagreeable (talk) 03:03, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. Yes, I do realize that WP's image policy generally allows only completely free photos of living individuals ("fair use" is not allowed when there is any theoretical possibility of finding a free photo), so we can't take anything from lds.org, online news sites, etc. But if I do manage to find something suitable (and someone else hasn't already beaten me to it), I'll go ahead and update the photo. Richwales (talk) 03:13, 1 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that the photo should be changed if possible. I'm sure if someone were to request permission from the LDS church, they would provide a more "standard" photo for Elder Bednar, and probably of the other leaders of the church.23:01, 4 November 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Osrevad (talkcontribs)
