Darrel J. McLeod is Nehiyaw (Cree) from Treaty 8 territory in Canada. Darrel’s first memoir, Mamaskatch: A Cree Coming of Age (Douglas & McIntyre; Milkweed Editions), won the 2018 Governor General's Award for Non-Fiction, and was a finalist for the RBC Charles Taylor Prize, BC Book Prize and Victoria Butler Book Prize. The USA version of Mamaskatch also achieved a starred review by Kirkus Reviews. The sequel to Mamaskatch, entitled Peyakow: Reclaiming Cree Dignity, will be released in Canada and the USA in the spring of 2021. Darrel speaks of French and Spanish and is studying Cree. He holds degrees in French literature and education from the University of British Columbia. Darrel has had a diverse career: a French teacher, School Principal in Yekooche First Nation, Director of a provincial curriculum center, Executive Director of Education and International Affairs at the Assembly of First Nations, and Chief Negotiator for the Government of Canada. Darrel is also a jazz singer. He lives in Sooke, BC and spends winters in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.
