Possible additions

I read in the list of things that could be added is something that shows he did have struggles, etc.. This might be able to be included. The information that he was suddenly dropped by his long time coach when he married and started his family. And that he went through a period that he calls his "dark years"...etc.. I did have that included a while back, but it was removed. Also the fact that he went through that a period of 5 years that he didn't sing at all. If this can be used, I can find sources. But I'm still blocked everywhere but here Bob 13:39, 9 January 2007 (UTC)

early difficulties

I just reread that Classical Singer mag. article and see that this is not the one that went into details of that period when he was dropped by long time vocal coach who felt he wouldn't have time to devote to his career, after starting his family. I'll post links if and when you have not more important things to do, you can perhaps visit that site and read the Christopher Closeup interviews. I'm not sure that can be used however, but just thought you might want to investige it. The second one below he talks more specifically about that period near the bottom of interview, but I'm still looking for the one where he discussed that early split with his coach specifically. as I know I've read it a lot. Maybe in one of those references already on the page. Will continue to look.

Mayor Giuliani

, As I know accuracy is of utmost importance,the mention in article now leads us to believe that Giuliani only heard Rodriguez signing after 9-11. Not true. so Hopefully we can find the information that Giuliani had known of his talent long before 9-11, as he'd seen him sing at Broadway on Broadway and other charity events around New York prior to 9-11. I know this is documented including a photo from that time of him and Guilini shaking hands, etc. He was in fact trying to get a meeting with Placido Dominge arranged for Rodriguez, even before 9-11, but due to their schedules ,it never happened until at the Prayer for America event, when Placido heard Rodriguez sing for the first time. • My reading of the article only went as far as verifying that the info that was supposed to be there was, in fact, there. So I would have to go back and read everything in full to find that. If you are sure of it, we will definitely need to rephrase things--but not until we can find the right references. As it stands, everything in this is sourced. Ok, found what I was looking for. I also did a quick search and don't see these at first seach on Google, maybe would have to go to newpaper archives. but again they are archived on the Media site. Just so you can see what I have and if they are worth more searching to find original article? Below are two paragraphs and the link for entire article on archives site and author/title of articles.

Giuliani heard about this bad audition and decided to arrange meeting with Placido Domingo and Rodriguez,about a year or more, prior to 9-11.

Domingo's and Rodriguez's schedules never allowed that meeting to happen, so Placido first heard Rodriguez's voice at 9-11, but he was already familiar with Rodriguez's name from conversations with Giuliani.

So when Rodriguez went up to Placido to introduce himself, Domingo alread knew who he was, and Rodriguez repeated that "Giuliani had been trying to get them together for over a year" Placido said he recognized that Rodriguez had a great voice and the offer was made by Domingo to come to study with him at the Vilar in Washington. (actualy I think that Rodriguez had to do an audition also but it was pretty much a done deal after Placido heard him at Prayer for America.

His choice of joining the PD

Hi Jeff, I need to find you something to show that Rodriguez was "a singer who became a police officer". An important point, that he didnt' give up singing to join the NYPD, but when they offred him that job, it was the perfect one that would give him a steady income and still allow him to sing. He never really gave up on that dream to sing full time.. Reading that very first section, seems to need a bit of tweaking. Check the Opening at the very top

Just go back and read that very first section, that just seems to lead the reader to feel that he gave up on his singing to join the NYPD. Do you know what I mean? Because he didn't. he still was firmly determined to continue singing, even when he accepted the job with the NYPD. The way it's written now, sort changes the impression that is given. I don't have it exactly right, but I think you'll see what I'm trying to do.. just omit that word "choice as it seems to indicate he make a choice NOT to continue his singing, but instead to be a cop.. subtle diffence, but very important. This also reinforces that fact that when he was a police officier he didn't stop singing, but pursued ahead full steam to keep singing.

Off duty, Mr. Rodriguez has had a parallel life as a singer: he has performed light opera and contemporary show tunes. He is a mainstay of productions by Brooklyn-based Regina Opera and has appeared at Carnegie Hall.

He is also one of the organizers of Broadway Magic, an ensemble of singers and musicians who do benefit shows in New York -- they just wrapped up several weeks of Christmas concerts.

No, most photos are not in the public domain, but are copyrighted by the person who took them. Generally speaking, it is difficult to find public domain photos of living persons. You can read about the guidelines here and here. Please err on the side of caution when uploading photos, since photos not supplying fair use rationales will be deleted. The photo now being used on the article page has a Public Domain tag, and the lisence says it was taken by the person who uploaded it. That is best sort of photo to use, for Wikipedia purposes. Another guestion you can answer?

I am curious: there are many media articles that have used the phrase "Time magazine has called his the voice that consoled the nation".. or something like that. They never give information of which issue, etc.. and so far I've not found it. Is this something that can be used on a Wikipedia page like Rodriguez's? I would not use that quote, if I were you, without having the actual source material at hand. I did an archive search of Time Magazine, and could find only one reference to Mr. Rodriguez, and it said nothing like that quote. Jeffpw 09:53, 10 January 2007 (UTC)

Peer review request

I posted this under the PR request and on this page:

I would appreciate if this request for peer review were put on hold for at least a week. This article has no stability, and all edits made to it are intensely and often inappropriately edited by an editor, who while possibly meaning well, has been hostile to 3 prior editors who tried to make improvements to the article. In addition this user created 7 or 8 sockpuppet accounts, now blocked, to facilitate this hostility. Jeff has done a lot of good work on the aritlce, but I think allowing it to breathe for a week would do it no harm, and could potentially lead to a better relationship among editors who edit it in the future. I think it would be unfair for anyone to step in and PR the article only to meet with revertions and potentially being attacked. This is not an assumption of bad faith on my part, I think people can change. But I think that when things are heated up adding new people into the broth is not as good an idea as waiting until the broth has cooled well below the boiling point. Could this simply be withdrawn for a week, then be reposted?

Wikipedia is in for the long haul, a little patience, and a small showing that other people's edits or comments will be respected might be accomplished with a wait. KP Botany 16:33, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Study versus serious student

He began to study singing at the age of ten, and attended the American Youth Repertory Company in Manhattan, where he would later act as assistant director.[3][4]

The quote for this line says "Rodriguez has been a serious student of singing since he was ten, but The Spirit of America showcases his unique ability to touch his listeners." What is written in the article is not, as I pointed out before, an accurate rendition of the information. My son began to study dance at the age of three, yet he became a serious student of dance at the age of ten. We only know, from the information provided, that Rodriguez "has been a serious student of music since he was ten." Hi Jeff, I know you've put in an extraordinary amount of time on this page and I almost am hesitant to ask for more, but I keep having these nagging concerns. If you have a chance, please take a look at the personal interview and his time frame. I'm aware that some of the media articles mentioned ten years of age, but most of what I find is using 12 as the benchmark, including the tenor himself. Daniel Rodriguez: I will tell you a little about myself. I have been singing since I was 12 years old. I started singing in school. My first role in school was Judd Frye in Oklahoma.

The drama teacher in school was a very talented man who studied at Julliard. He studied with Stella Adler and had an extensive background in theater and music. He also started coaching, and he also had a company called "The American Youth Repertoire Company" in Manhattan. They put on three, four, or five shows a year, and he invited me to do that. I was thirteen when I started.

At thirteen, I was training musically. I was taking both voice lessons and piano lessons. I was in a repertory company, where you do everything,from roles to set designs, lighting, everything from A to Z. So that gave me a lot of practical experience in the theatre. I studied with my teacher four days a week.

If there is indeed such confusing information about the singer's age to begin a musical career this information should be replaced with something ambiguous (which is editorially dreadful) such as young child or adolescent or omitted altogether. voice qualities

Hi again Jeff, I know you'll take this in the way it was intended, just as a personal view point, but I was saddened to see the removal of that quote about the voice, that mentioned "baritonal colorings", etc.. I'm not sure who made the decision, or why it was removed, but seems that this is one of the things that I know I always look for in an article about a singer. I do want to know what the voice sounds like, even before I take the next steps to investiage further. If there is any way to bring that back as part of this article, it might be worth the effort? A check to the minor edit box signifies that only superficial differences exist between the current and previous version: typo corrections, formatting and presentational changes, rearranging of text without modifying content, etc. A minor edit is a version that the editor believes requires no review and could never be the subject of a dispute.

This, is a minor edit, a spelling correction from "Tt" to "At."[1]

THIS is a change of content, an edit that requires review as the the content was in dispute on this talk page:[2]

As "early teens" and "12" are not the same, and if the source does not clarify, you can't use it to reference this statement, if it does and it was wrong, you need to explain this in your edit summary, and NOT mark it a minor edit. I thought that Jeff read all the article before writing the text, as many of them had been quoted incorrectly initially. You can't reference something to what it did not say.

And AGAIN, this is not a minor change, as it is in quotation marks and is tied to a source:[4]

So, where does the quotation come from? If the source, which you did not change, lists both, use both.

A nicely done article. There are some minor things that need to be fixed. God Bless America is the name of a short song and should be in double quotation marks instead of italics. The picture of him is tagged with {{PD-self}} but does not appear to have been taken by the uploader. If this is the case, make sure to correct the tag and the uploader will need to forward the email to permissions-en@wikimedia.org or provide a link to where the permission was given. Also the sentence that begins "After marrying at 19 and having a son, Rodriguez's mentor decided that he was not keeping music as his first priority" reads that the mentor married, had a son, and didn't have music as the first priority. David, thanks for the great photos. I would like to keep the one small head shot that is taken on a different day, however, as this gives more variety in time to the person. IFF there is nothing wrong with the other photo copyright wise, and it has time date information, would you please make an editorial decision towards keeping that one plus one of yours in the article, the editorial decision to include placement? You guys can do the page how you want; I won't revert. I only requested Rodriguez as a gift to Jeffpw. But to throw in my two cents: I would hesitate to take down either of the photos I put on there. First, Daniel took the photos specifically for Wikipedia. Second, the old lead is just a big head shot that is overexposed. I think the question is variety vs. quality. That said, the article is large enough to accomodate more than two photos. I would keep the lead, and the angel one is a particular favorite of mine. You could put the big head shot somewhere else in the article and be fine. But I certainly wouldn't change the lead for the previous one. Like I said, you guys can make the decision. I don't really have a horse in this race. I have about 40 photos of Rodriguez, and only about 10 quality ones. Time is an issue with getting them uploaded. Then let's wait for now, until you have the other photos uploaded. I just don't want only two photos taken on the same day, when we have a larger time range of options--in articles about people, especially these samll biographies, this can be important. This is a small article, and I'm not sure it can hold more than two photos. Yes, I like the angel one, it's soft and strong and elegant, but still we have to use the photos to convey information. However, I believe JeffPW can edit photos into articles, so when you post a gallery of the best we or he can make an editorial decision about which to use. I can't format photos into articles, so I have to leave it to someone else. Good for JeffPW to pester you for the photos. David Shankbone's Daniel Rodriguez photos

I have obviously been drawn into something I had no idea existed. This is how the Shankbone photos came about: I think Jeffpw is a good guy, and he's been having a hard time lately on here. I saw on his User page he was proud of his work on this article. I thought as a surprise I would see if I could get some better photos of Rodriguez to cheer up Jeff. I don't really want to become embroiled in these issues, but I think it would be good if you guys put your differences behind you and start over fresh. Let the past be past and work together. It sounds like the most contentious issues are over, for the most part. Bob, there's nothing wrong with you editing the article, especially now that you have given full disclosure. Here's the gallery; if I get more time I will load more. Choose whatever you guys want:

Could someone please check on a recent activity by a KP Botany who has suggested that all my previous additions of recent months maybe undone at the Daniel Rodriguez article. What is this about. I have been trying to build, as Wikipedia has noted that they would like to expand this article. I have no conflict of interest. Not sure exactly what is meant to infer, but I have not vandelized or in anyway done anything other then try to do what Wikipedia seems to be trying to do, in building on a good informative article to make it even better. Quality and accuracy versus quantity

When I read about Rodriguez I see an overwhelming audience response to a wonderful singer. But when I read about him on Wikipedia, I see an overwhelming volume of diluted words.

This is what the article says about Rodriguez:

"Simply, Daniel Rodriguez’ performance was electrifying, pure magic, pure energy, pure emotion and blazing in glory. It has to be his signature role."

Our quote, using too much of it, and poorly using it, dilutes the impact of the praise:

"Paul Joseph Walkowski of Opera Online wrote of that performance by Rodriguez: “electrifying, pure magic, pure energy, pure emotion and blazing in glory. As Canio he stood in a class by himself: a star of easily recognizable magnitude and a force to be reckoned with on the opera stage.” [56][57]

Our comment is lost in a streaming stream of comments about him singing songs his mother taught him, about him being a short-order cook, and driving a truck.

This article is not good because it is a catalogue of every thing he ever did. That's not what an encyclopedia article is.

I'm going to edit this article to read well, in an organized fashion.

No, duplication is not necessary.[7] Try to get the references at the right quote, though, for in-line references, but also, please use citation styles, as this will list the sources in the references lists at the bottom of the page, rather than just the title of the article and "retrieved by." This is an attempt at an encyclopedia article on Daniel Rodriguez, and Wikipedia is an excellent location for this article. Can someone please help

At Daniel Rodríguez, someone keep putting wrong Olympic song sung by tenor. He sang "America The Beautiful".. There are a few mistakes in articles such as Media Wire article that names incorrectly as God Bless America, - that is not correct.
