Let's try it again[edit]

Glad to have this page back up. Lets work on adding more info and make it a really good article. This page should not exist simply because there is no such group as SJ Sharpnel? How can one exist if it never stays fluid? There is no DJ Sharpnel, only whatever people decide to call it. How fucking stupid has music become? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.70.141.107 (talk • contribs)

Added new section: Western Influence[edit]

I'm an extreme novice user of wikipedia, I signed up primarily to aid the revival of this article. I wanted to cite my sources at the end of the section I created. However, the only way to prove what I said was true would be to cite their myspace pages, which I'm assuming is against the wikipedia policy to cite a social networking site-- what options are available here to prove what I said is true? Please send me a message if you think you can help-- or if you think what I wrote is utter garbage and think it should be removed; please tell me how to imrpove what I write in the future!   • The point isn't to say what you want then look for sources that prove you're right, the information is supposed to come directly from outside sources. What you wrote also sounds too much like an appraisal of the subject and doesn't maintain a neutral point of view. Make sure what you're writing is cold, hard facts- not opinions. There's nothing wrong with sourcing Myspace pages in this context though (as far as I know), although the importance of those statements can be questioned. Lastly, read more about what makes a good article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:What_is_an_article%3F. I don't mean to criticize you, especially as an unregistered layman but if you don't follow the policies exactly, you end up doing more harm than good.

  • Anon makes some good points. Using an artist's own Myspace page to cite claims that the artist helped spread the popularity of a genre, as this claim requires some sort of unbiased (and reliable) source. The problems are extremely evident if you think about it this way: if I create a Myspace page that says that my music helped popularize rock 'n' roll in Malaysia, you're not just going to believe me, right? That's basically the reasoning behind minimizing use of primary sources. You want something like a relatively reliable music magazine or something.   • I agree with your analogy about the rock 'n' roll in Malaysia, but I do not think this is the same thing. If DJ Sharpnel had on their OWN MySpace page "we helped create a whole new music genre" then that would not be a good source to cite on his Wikipedia article. However, if we are trying to show that DJ Sharpnel has had a growing influence in other artists and has contributed to the genre that way, then it seems appropriate to cite OTHER artists who DO credit Sharpnel as influence.68.47.55.221 (talk) 00:45, 15 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
