Backward compatibility[edit]

The paragraph about backward compatibility only being solved by JIT isn't true. Backward compatibility was solved by having dependency information placed into the instruction stream (by the compiler). In that way, wider machines that issue multiple long instruction words in parallel can be built with full backward compatibility. That's how Itanium and the TI DSP solutions do it. The comment may not be true "NOW" but was true then - I worked there, and that was our belief at the time. Note that some of the folks that worked at Cydrome went on to work on the Itanium.
