Teen Grid Residents[edit]

Until such a time as there are a significant amount of Teen-Grid centric entries, any information regarding "well known" Residents, whether they be from the Main or Teen Grid, should go in this article.

If the article grows to a size that requires some pruning along the guidelines of WP:SIZE, I'm proposing now that a similar list be created for the Teen Grid Residents over on Resident (Teen Second Life)

Re-ordering the list[edit]

I was talking to someone about the list article, and it seems that they though that the lists should be alphabetically ordered by surname.

Thoughts ?

  1. Should the list be re-ordered by surname ?
  2. Should only the 2 lists with a primary focus on natural persons (as opposed to virtual persons) be re-ordered by surname ?

Break out the three lists to List of* articles[edit]

What're people thoughts on breaking out the 3 lists into two or three separate articles ?

Vandalism[edit]

  • I am seeing a ton of modification of this article for no rational reason except to put in false information, and so I have added the semi-protection vandalism tag. Sorry if this restricts anyone trying to give relevant information, but this article keeps getting trashed. --Texas Patriot - Frank 08:13, 18 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think this is a good idea. a lot of very recent changs smack of vandalism as some people's spam has been removed. it is of note that some people have gained notariety WITHIN second life and perhaps a seperate section should be created along with those who have gained noterity OUTSIDE of second lif for things they have done in world along wioth the section of rl people who have entered second life. it is a matter of perspctive one who has MORE noteriety i mean anshe chung or senator warner or prokofy neva or Torley Linden or Jumpman Lane or adam curry or kurt vonnegut or whovever. As second life is a burgeoning WORLD this article bears attention in the area of cleansing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Martinbane (talkcontribs) 21:49, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Criteria for "Residents who achieved fame or notoriety through Second Life"[edit]

This section on the page states the following criteria for "fame and notoriety":

The following is a list of Residents who have become well known outside of Second Life to varying degrees, either due to a significant accomplishment in-world - generally being featured in a Linden Lab press release or news source primarily focusing on Second Life or gaming in general (e.g. Anshe Chung and Tateru Nino) or have been featured in major news sources outside of the scope of Second Life or their in-world accomplishment has carried on the "real" world (e.g. Laukosargas Svarog and Kermitt Quirk )

While I can't find any fault with that type of criteria (they seem pretty reasonable to me), I'm surprised at how little unknown half of that list actually is "outside Second Life". The issue here is mostly: "how often do these people get featured on LL's PR or news source?" I can't imagine why, for instance, Aimee Weber is not mentioned — if you use Google's PageRank algorithm to establish notoriety (as good a criterium as any other), you'll have Aimee Weber listed as often as people like Tateru Nino (or myself, for that matter, and I'm not part of the list) and close to Prokofy Neva, but I'm pretty sure Aimee was featured on far more RL media than everybody put together with the exception of Anshe Chung. Cristiano Midnight has probably half that ranking in Google, but how often is, say, Grey Blankes mentioned?... just three hundred links on Google. Hardly "notorious" except perhaps for a very close-knitten group that know who she is and what she does.

Although bloggers tend to be favoured by Google PageRank (for obvious reasons), I'd like you to consider linking at leas t one link to a non-SL medium that featured a candidate to this "hall of fame". Without references at all, one might use Google's link count as a criterium, and set up a threshold at around 50,000 links or so. You'll see that the number of "famous people" will be in that range.

  • I agree with you as usual. A good deal of the people here seem to have added themselves... According to Wikipedia rules that's vanity. "Owner of the second island on the teen grid"? "One of the quickest up and coming companies in SL"? I'm SO inclined to submit this article to AfD :)) Sarg 15:38, 29 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Gwyneth is right, this section quickly needs such criteria for entry - I recognize only a few of these names, the rest strike me as people just seeking publicity / recognition (entering their own names).

User:Circle Line 18:01, 20 June 2007 (GMT)

Perhaps the criteria for entry would be "has this person appeared in mainstream national media more than once?" That would narrow it down to perhaps 4-5 names, as it should be. Most of the names listed (mine included) are only marginally famous in Second Life itself, much less in the greater scheme of things.

As such, if such a thing were to happen, it could get folded back into the main Second Life article, and this article could be deleted. --Lordfly Digeridoo 69.246.9.98 (talk) 23:25, 29 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Signpostmarv 11:14, 1 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

the section should be reordered combined etc into a section denoting noteriety within and outside sl or a section should be created denoting sl fame. A mention years ago in some article some years ago mayhave been topical and a bit offame long ago but that 15 minutes has waned. However, it is still worthy of note. None of the real life people mentioned in THAT section by Robin Linden's definition of residents even qualify as residents and really is a stretch to have them here. so , i think in an article about residents those who have achieved fame through in world accomplishment should be duly noted here in some fashion. SPAM on the other hand should be purged :Martinbane

Focussed Peer Review[edit]

It seems that the opinion of the Wikipedia Community with regards to "Notable Residents" is that it's rather dubious and prone to spam.

In order to encourage a more focussed peer review process, I have copied the section on Residents who achieved fame or notoriety through Second Life to the SL Wiki, the argument being that we (the Residents) are in a better position to gauge whether or not a Resident is "famous" or "notorious" for their Second Life activities.

Since account creation and anonymous editing of the SL Wiki is restricted, contributions to Notable Residents and the talk page can be considered as verified as being made by the Resident whose name is listed in the edit history (whereas linking a wikipedia account with a Second Life accounts is generally unauthenticated and not reliable).

This is a good idea but maybe needs to be expanded a bit as very few residents use the wikiMartinbane —Preceding unsigned comment added by 166.61.207.227 (talk) 17:10, 18 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Species[edit]

I watched the SR-related 'Wonderland' programme the other week, and saw the residents were all Humanoid. The main page here does mention animals, robots, etc., but I don't think it's very clear whether or not an avatar can be totally, utterly non-Humanoid in appearance. Can anyone give me any knowledge (this question from someone interested in joining SR) (User: Stripey). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.102.43.174 (talk) 00:13, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm going to guess you mean SL, not SR :-P

Move Page[edit]

I think this Page (if any of the content is conisdered Encyclopedic?), should be moved to a more appropriate name, such as "Second Life Culture". It seems to be a bit of a fancruft definition meant purely for self definition of the standing of people within the world at the current, and with all the lists and spiel ripped out it could be expanded to be more about the world, which would also help reduce the size of the primary article. - Jimmi Hugh (talk) 20:45, 18 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well considering the "activities" section, subculture subsection and essay on internal politics, I'm going to move the page, but I think it's probably one for an AfD, perhaps a little too much unsourced fancruft. - Jimmi Hugh (talk) 19:34, 4 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I moved it again to Culture of Second Life, in line with our other "X of Y" articles. GreenReaper (talk) 07:30, 20 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Help Allison[edit]

An IP has been trying to put in Neko to the subcultures section. This is her citing, can someone fix this please? Nezzadar [SPEAK] 07:09, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Specific references to Neko include comments by Torley Linden (e.g., "But where are all the neko? It just isn't a comprehensive virtual world without them. :(" - Torley here: [[3]]; their inclusion in (real life) research by the Blekinge Institute of Technology in Sweden, due to their significance in virtual world communities: [[4]]; and their inclusion as one of the four primary species of Second Life, as cited in the Mindmeister map by Botgirl Questi here: [[5]].

External influences[edit]

This section should be rewritten. Ginsu Linden, as well as most companies, left Second Life. Gmacar (talk) 13:59, 23 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I agree that this section is outdated. I think I should edit about Ginsu Linden having left Second Life. Sun Microsoft Systems has gone out of business. Does anyone know which other businesses that are no longer in Second Life and which businesses are newly interested/doing things in Second Life? Thanks for any responses.Rosiesievers20 (talk) 12:10, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That shows how out-dated this article is. That question was asked in March, 2011. Should we divide the section into former and presents influences?--Canoe1967 (talk) 13:29, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That could be a possibility. Still, I would like to know which businesses are still present in Second Life in terms of activity. I might put some information about identity in Second Life to back up a source in this section.Rosiesievers20 (talk) 14:10, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think that is the main problem with 2nd life articles. All the sources are inworld and not reported in reliable sources for Wikipedia. Residents just add line after line of unsourced material. You could email the second life inworld newspapers and see if they can help. I think they may be reliable enough for Wikipedia's 2nd life articles about inworld material.--Canoe1967 (talk) 14:27, 11 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

That would be useful. What is their address?Rosiesievers20 (talk) 15:07, 11 February 2013 (UTC) I put some information about identities in Second Life in this section. What do you think? Thanks for any responses.Rosiesievers20 (talk) 14:16, 14 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Blacklisted Links Found on the Main Page[edit]

Cyberbot II has detected that page contains external links that have either been globally or locally blacklisted. Links tend to be blacklisted because they have a history of being spammed, or are highly innappropriate for Wikipedia. This, however, doesn't necessarily mean it's spam, or not a good link. If the link is a good link, you may wish to request whitelisting by going to the request page for whitelisting. If you feel the link being caught by the blacklist is a false positive, or no longer needed on the blacklist, you may request the regex be removed or altered at the blacklist request page. If the link is blacklisted globally and you feel the above applies you may request to whitelist it using the before mentioned request page, or request it's removal, or alteration, at the request page on meta. When requesting whitelisting, be sure to supply the link to be whitelisted and wrap the link in nowiki tags. The whitelisting process can take its time so once a request has been filled out, you may set the invisible parameter on the tag to true. Please be aware that the bot will replace removed tags, and will remove misplaced tags regularly.
