The Brownsville Tigers was a group of 20 men who took up arms to fight Juan Cortina after his occupation of Brownsville the Matamoros Militia joined them not long after at the instruction of the Mexican Government. They were formed around September 30, 1859 and first saw action when they attempted an assault on the home of Juan Cortina's mother at Rancho Del Carmen five miles west of Brownsville, the assault was a failure as they were turned back by Juan's "Cortinistas". The same month as their failed assault Texas Rangers arrived to assist them followed by an even larger and more organised group of Rangers under Captain John "Rip" Ford. The Unites States Army also sent some troops to the nearby Fort Brown who would also assist in stopping and catching Juan Cortina. After the end of the First Cortina War the group was disbanded as no further records of the group can be found. In 1875 Cortina was arrested at the request of the residents of Brownsville long after the disbanding of the Tigers.
