Notice[edit]

This is just a notice to any one interested in this article that I will be developing a fully explained and sourced version of this article in my userpace over the next week or so, to be uploaded here once complete. It will be loosely based on the current text, but will be extensively sourced, expanded and rewritten. I note that there has been no serious activity on this page, but should any one have any comments, requests or questions then please notify me either here or at my talk page and I will do my best to respond and incorporated the results into the finished article. In addition to rewriting the text, I intend two major changes:

1) Unless any one can give a good reason why I shouldn't, I intend to move this page to Cornwallis's Retreat, which is the name for this battle in every English source I've seen. If it can be demonstrated that First Battle of Groix is a common name for the action then I would be happy to stand corrected, but I don't think I've ever seen it used outside Wikipedia (the battle wasn't even fought that near Groix - the accounts I've read put the start of the action further north off Penmarck, with Cornwallis reteating westwards out to sea).

To add: Action of 17 June 1795 would also be an appropriate title, as Cornwallis's Retreat could be perceived as a little one sided.--Jackyd101 (talk) 23:00, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

2) I will be removing the order of battle from this page, and instead developing another page which incorporates the orders of battle in both this action and the Battle of Groix on 23 June. The title of this new page TBC. This makes sense to me because the French fleet was the same at both battles and didn't enter port in the meantime, making the actions part of the same campaign - if anyone thinks this is a bad idea then again, I'd be happy to discuss it with you.

Regards--Jackyd101 (talk) 18:18, 11 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I am now going to move the article I have created into the redirect Cornwallis's Retreat. I will move this talk page to Talk:Cornwallis's Retreat and redirect the exisiting article here. In a week or so the order of battle list article will be created, probably named Order of Battle in the Biscay campaign of June 1795 which will complement this article. I am still very open to further discussion on this article's title - I still have not come across non-wikipedia usage of First Battle of Groix however.--Jackyd101 (talk) 17:14, 16 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

ferious attack[edit]

I suppose it's the form of the original writing in the 18th Century document for "furious attack" ? Wisdood (talk) 09:00, 1 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
