This article says John J. Corning is the founder of Corning Glass Works. I think I have seen that in some old newspaper articles, but the Wiki article and others on Corning Glass Works appear to disagree. Is there some documentation? 97.102.148.253 (talk) 23:48, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

", founder of Corning Glass Works,"
I agree with you, this claim looks suspicious, so let's move it here for now until it can be confirmed, which might well be never. Carptrash (talk) 16:12, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Here is a message that I just received from a very helpful and fast person at the Corning Glass Museum:

"The founder of Corning Glass was Amory Houghton (1813-1882). The company began as Brooklyn Flint Works in 1864 in Brooklyn, NY, and moved to Corning four years later, changing its name to fit the location.

The town of Corning is named for Erastus Corning , born in 1794 in Norwich, CT, one of the founders of the town.

So, different Cornings entirely. Carptrash (talk) 16:37, 18 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Carptrash - I was aware of the Corning Glass history and Houghton and Brooklyn connections, so I am happy with putting this information aside for the moment. I would like to check the source if there is anything other than this WIki article and its originator. I have emailed the Connecticut History Museum to learn more, especially about John J. Corning and how he earned his money. I am a relation of the Corning for whom this fountain was dedicated, —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.102.148.253 (talk) 20:21, 3 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Sometimes we are happier not knowing how our ancestors earned their money, but good luck in your research and I look forward to seeing more on the subject. Consider registering as a card carrying wikipedia editor. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 15:41, 4 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
